Hands-on work experience... May 25

... backed-up by a strong linguistic base through youth and student education is all I've ever needed. Working for agencies during my entire career also helped me to rather easily adapt to all upcoming technologies. They are basically handed to you or you are at least made aware of them in an early stage. As far as specializations are concerned: I see no need for expensive education programs if the internet combined with common sense and a critical mind gives me everything I need.

A mix of these, but there’s one item missing: nothing beats language immersion. I thought I spoke French rather well until I went to live in Brussels where I discovered that my everyday knowledge skills were below average. Immersion forces you to use the new language for everyday tasks and communication…

doing a substantial amount of CPD, in some cases involving paid events, combined with lots of translation, i.e., hands-on experience, and some self-study to operating based on what works best for customers so as to remain available and affordable: This means lots of translation experience, a small, but not completely negligible amount of self-study, and a small amount of CPD, in rare cases paid (then only at affordably priced events), mostly free events.

In trying to do due diligence, dodge dodgy agencies and trying to separate the wheat from the chaff, I would say "the school of hard knocks".
