Not possible in Spain Oct 20, 2025

I live in Spain and, as far as I know, when self-employed people reach retirement age, they're not allowed to get their full pension and carry on working full time.

If they carry on working for a year after retirement age, which is currently 67, then they're entitled to receive 50% of their pension (about €500/month) and can continue to work.

No Oct 20, 2025

No — I’ve moved on to other interests, financed entirely by pension income earned in Europe way back in the 20th Century.

Retirement and Work Oct 20, 2025

I've retired, well, a few years ago, but am still working. The only difference is that I am now a little more selective.

I am working, declaring and la seguridat social is informed.

receive 50% of their pension

Something like that happenes also in Slovenia. I am not sure by how much but it is limited too. My mom didn't agree to it and went in full pension, after 40 years of work.

Law in Spain changed about 5 years ago, so not anymore.

Doing it now Oct 20, 2025

I’m now about 75% retired, but only because there’s very little work for me any more.

I might carry on indefinitely with a few jobs if they keep coming, but there is much more to life than translating.

Like stopping the rise of fascism. And cats. And baking.

I don't think so Oct 20, 2025

I can only dream of my retirement right now and I absolutely still love my job, but I think I would quit altogether. I would need more than 1 lifetime to do everything I would like to do (hiking, traveling, cinema, cultural discovery ...).

To work and receive the full retirement pension in Spain, you need to work until you're 72 Oct 20, 2025

A couple of months ago, I received a letter from the Seguridad Social and it's as I mentioned. Self-employed people aren't entitled to 'flexible retirement'.

...the amount of the pension in active retirement has been modified, which now depends on the period elapsed between reaching the ordinary legal retirement age and the date on which the retirement pension is accessed in its active modality, according to the following scale:

with 1 year of delay, 45% of the pension will be collected;
with 2 years of delay, 55% of the pension;
with 3 years of delay, 65% of the pension;
with 4 years of delay, 80% of the pension; and
From the 5th year of delay, 100% of the pension will be collected.

In English
The retirement pension will be compatible with self-employment (self-employment) whose total annual income does not exceed the minimum interprofessional wage (€12,960). Those who perform these activities will not be required to pay social security contributions.

Soon Oct 22, 2025

I will reach the retirement age soon and was planing to cut back a bit and do some other things. Unfortunately, Corona and AI have already done the cutting back so I guess I will retire but not really that comfortably. I will remain available for translation and MTPE work on request but I will not actively seek new clients anymore.
