Hi Sergio! Do you mean the TM of all the phrases in the world ever used in that language pair, or did you have a subject in mind?

Thanks for your reply Steven... i´m thinking in some dictionary for translations from english to portuguese. I use the sdl trados but i can´t find a reliable TM!

Translation memories basically form a database of sentences that have been translated before. Many translators have their own database (which their CAT tools create over the years), and most of us create one big one, and then different ones for different clients. One same phrase can be created in many different ways, and not all ways are suitable for all situations. It is not so easy to find usable TM's, except perhaps when a client provides one - such as the European Union does, for outsourced translations. And if you find one, the usability is usually low. I only expect leverage out of my TM's when I translate for clients who have had earlier, similar documents. In technical translations, for example, that is the case. Let's say you are to translate a manual for a television, and there is a TM for the manual of the previous model. It stands to reason that certain parts will repeat themselves.
The TM's from the European Union are useful because it contains references to legislation in the correct formatting, or for example the "correct" (i.e. what the EU wants) translation of certain style formula. But if you are not translating EU documents, they won't help you much. "The chair", for example, usually means the chairperson in EU documents, but hardly ever has that meaning in any of the other materials I work on.
You can also create TM's yourself on the basis of these older materials. That is called "alignment", and almost all CAT tools can do it.
You can also find TM's in the form of collaborative or machine tools, but the quality of those goes down as the field becomes more general. In the end, you are responsible for the translation. You can't rely on what someone else might have done with a similar text in the past.
The other instruments are "term bases". These are lists of terminology, with metadata attached. These can be purchased (for example by buying a specialised dictionary), found on the Internet, created by yourself, or shared with colleagues. Many CAT tools allow you to extract terminology from earlier translations. SDL Multiterm seems an excellent terminology management tools, but I believe you would need to buy additional software to extract terms from older documents. Then again, it is not such a big deal to research on the basis of publicly available translations in your specialisms and to create your own materials.
In short, CAT tools do help by taking some of the repetitive work out of your hands, but they won't present you with ready-made translations. Unfortunately for our party and family life, and fortunately for our business, a good result still requires us to do the actual work . ▲ Collapse
