Hello everyone,
I am trying to decide on buying a dictionary and after much (re)search still am confused, so
your insight will be much appreciated.
I am looking for a monolingual Italian dictionary of general , i.e not any specific field of knowledge, scope
that would allow me to read (and understand the fine literature spanning few last centuries.

I am trying to decide on buying a dictionary and after much (re)search still am confused, so
your insight will be much appreciated.
I am looking for a monolingual Italian dictionary of general , i.e not any specific field of knowledge, scope
that would allow me to read (and understand the fine literature spanning few last centuries.
Currently I am using Oxford-Paravia Italian-English dictionary that falls short too frequently, and not only with the medieval Dante Alighieri but more modern writers like Pirandello as well.
Searching forum here and the Net and Amazon brings up few candidates, but unfortunately I
couldn't find review/opinion about them in order to decide which one to pick (buying all of them isn't an option) .
So far I see the following (but sure there are more):

I'm an Italian native translator. If you want to buy a good Italian dictionary, I think the best one is:

Il dizionario della lingua italiana di Giacomo Devoto e Gian Carlo Oli published by Le Monnier.

Otherwise you can take a look at

I swear by my Dizionario della lingua italiana by Fernando Palazzi e Gianfranco Folena, Loescher Editore. It gives you the dates in which the words were recorded in writing for the first time, very useful for us translators, especially when working on literary texts.

Thank you very much, I wouldn't have found these dictionaries by myself .
I decided to go with the IL DEVOTO-OLI 2013 by Giacomo Devoto, Gian Carlo Oli (3240 p).
The Fernando Palazzi, Gianfranco Folena's "Dizionario della lingua italiana" looks great as well (2048 p) and is less expensive (38 Euro against aforementioned one for 65 Euro) but is substantially less available for purchase (probably went heavily out of print) and I don't want to risk buying from unknown sources.

N.B Ester - Tullio De Mauro's 8-volume Dizionario (http://cultura.utet.it/cultura/catalogo/details.jsp?id=633&t=2) looks grandiose indeed , alas, at the price of about 150 Euro per tome will have to wait until i get rich ▲ Collapse
