I notice that there is this new, scaled-down version of Trados at a much lower price than normal.

Does anyone know if this version of Trados is sufficient to take on Trados projects in general? Or does it only work on a limited number of Trados jobs?

Thanks,

Fully usable Jun 24, 2010

Hi Thomas,
I can confirm that the Starter version is fully usable and not limited as regards the number of projects processed.

Limited translation units Jun 24, 2010

By coincidence, I asked a similar thing in another thread yesterday. As I understand, the main limitation is that it only handles 5,000 translation units (="sentences"), but not being used to using a CAT tool, I'm not exactly sure if that means 5,000 sentences ever in the lifetime of using the program (which effectively makes it useless for real work, I think), or 5,000 per database and you can swap in and out databases at any point you wish, just that there can only be 5,000 in memory at any on... Another thing is that there seems to be a ProZ offer on at the moment to get MultiTerm free when you by the "full" version, whereas you don't get MultiTerm with the starter edition. I don't exactly understand what MultiTerm really buys you (I think essentially you can give it some of your translations and it builds a glossary from them), but a colleague in the other thread was swearing by it for her particular work.

The other thing that occurred to me-- but I don't know-- is maybe having the Starter edition is sufficient just so you can view other people's TMs/glossaries, even if you then don't use TRADOS per se to do the translation (i.e. you look at their glossary, but then use your brain, not TRADOS, to incorporate that glossary into your translation). In other words, it might allow you to participate in some translations where an agency needs you to "have TRADOS" in order to use a particular glossary or to put a tick in the box on their client's list of requirements, but where they don't actually care about the world of fluffy matches, fuzzy fuzziness etc etc. But I don't know exactly how often this situation arises...

Put another way: I'm very interested in other people's opinions as I'm in the same dilemma...
