Dear All,
Could any of you help me with this? How do you calculate what to charge for a semi-private class (2 students) based on your rate for a private lesson?
Thanks for all your help and suggestions in advance.

Dear Stromfi, we're going to have to know where you will be teaching this class. The rates in the United States are different than the rates in Mexico, China, etc.
I think what stromfi is asking, is: if s/he charges X for a private class, what should the rate be for a semi-private class of two as a function of X; we do not have to know what X is.

Individual Tutoring: 1.0 BTR ("Base tutoring rate") per one-hour lesson, or 1.5 BTR per 90-minute lesson (You set your own BTR based on market parameters)
Pair Tutoring: 1.5 BTR per one-hour lesson, or 2 BTR per 90-minute lesson
Small Classes (3-5 individuals): 2 BTR per 90-minuter class (in my experience, a one-hour class for more than two individuals is not very effective).
Medium-Size Classes (6-10 individuals): 3 BTR per 90-minute class

Large-Size Classes (more than 10 individuals): I do not recommend such large language classes
When you set your BTR, remember that it takes about 2 hours of preparation for each hour of teaching. Since nobody will pay that much, tutoring is largely a philanthropic activity. The fees merely help to formalize the relationship than they are actual livelihood. ▲ Collapse

Yes, I agree with all of Fuad's post, but here are two things to bear in mind as regards "semi-private" classes in my experience here in Spain (maybe other nationalities are a little less problematical)
1. The price you agree for the 'semi-private' class is the fixed price. i.e. if you are teaching two people and one day one of them can't come - you still charge the same price (as if there were 2 students)Make it quite clear from the start that it's their problem if they can't come - you ... 2. Make sure that the two or more students in question have a similar level, otherwise you'll end up trying to teach two -or more - different lessons at the same time (e.g. two adult friends decide to have classes together, one in elementary and the other upper intermediate. Or, more commonly, brothers and sisters of different ages - say a six year old and an eleven year old - within the same hour)

and great forum...
but with all due respect, 2 hours of preparation for each hour of teaching? So if a teacher does 20 contact hours (standard for some, light for others) then that would mean a 60 hour work week?
