The email address alone tells you this is a scam Jan 8

And yet thousands of people plunge on regardless in similar circumstances.
(Obviously Andrus was alert enough not to be deceived.)

Thank you for the report. Maybe others will take note.

advance payment or fake cheque scam Jan 8

This is a classic fake payment / overpayment scam.

You will do the work (these scammers have zero idea how much time this work will take), they "pay" you using a dodgy cheque, tell you its an overpayment, you "refund" them the excess and the cheque bounces so you lose.

The London Library is in London and would not pay in USD, even if it had the resources to translate out of copyright works of literature into Persian (they will already be in Persian).

They use this site and other translation sites to target people because these sites have lone freelancers looking for work who are very easily contactable.

Thankfully the OP here is smart and sussed this immediately

I actually asked "Hush Donald" why the London Library needs translations for books that have already been translated, he replied:
"The purpose of translating this book again is to provide a fresh perspective and to make the content accessible to a new audience. Each translation can bring out different nuances, cultural contexts, and interpretations that may not have been captured in previous versions. Additionally, advancements in language and changes in societal understanding can lead to a more relevant and engaging translation for contemporary readers. We aim to honor the original text while making it resonate with today’s audience."

Which is pretty sensible, perhaps with a slight hint of ChatGPT.
Unlike the idea of translating a 270-page mid-19th-century novel in 14 days.

Yeah they are still scammers. Just scammers who can type a basic prompt into ChatGPT or more likely just copy something that they have used before. They have an extensive network of fake websites and are scamming on a large scale. Organized criminals.

Quelle idée saugrenue 🙈 Jan 9

A. Leblanc et E. Gaboriau écrivaient en français. Jamais un éditeur n'utiliserait la traduction anglaise pour une nouvelle traduction vers une autre langue 🤣
