Hi Folks and merry Christmas or Aid Moubarak
I decided to become a member mainly because I lost a customer last year (I increased my rates) and my business is down by about 20%. Actually I prefer it like that, I can still support the household and I can have a few hours off in the week. But anyway, to be on the safe side, I thought I would try and subscribe.

I decided to become a member mainly because I lost a customer last year (I increased my rates) and my business is down by about 20%. Actually I prefer it like that, I can still support the household and I can have a few hours off in the week. But anyway, to be on the safe side, I thought I would try and subscribe.
So here's my own experience with this recent membership dated 6 December. Luck played quite a large part in this, I must confess.
On 12 December, I am approached by an agency through my Proz.com profile about a 60 kword project. Good and long BB record and prolific job poster. I was booked, so I reply sorry, I can't.
On 14 December, the project I was booked for comes in, but had shrunk from 25 kwords to .... 6000 words. I send a message to the prospect, telling them that in fact I am free from 20 December. They reply sorry, we have already assigned a team. I reply fair enough and think Ok, end of story.
On 20 December, the agency contacts me again. One of the translators has dropped out, and they're seeking a new one! I say fine, from 26 December I am available. We discuss conditions. I am not desperate for work, but trying to get a new client is exciting, so the negociation is balanced.
Today, here I am, deal struck: 60+ kwords, decent terms and maybe a new regular customer.
To put things in perspective, in 4.5 years of non-paying usership, I won a regular customer who approached me just the same, through my profile on Proz, and I won another regular one through bidding.
So I cannot tell for sure if the Platinum membership really made a difference.
But the coincidence of becoming a member a fortnight ago and getting today my first proz-related job for the past two years is worth mentioning.
Let's be optimistic for the new year!
Have a great holiday season.

I took note of your new-member one-liner ("Testing how effective an actual membership may be.") and hoped you would provide feedback to us by the end of next year. I'm glad to hear you got results so soon.
Thanks for posting. Happy holidays and good luck for next year.
I was a free user for a year before I went Platinum. During that year I didn't receive a single job offer through my profile, whereas within the first month of being a full member I got my first (regular, as it turned out later) customer. A coincidence?

Maybe I am jumping the gun but I would love to see the agencies get squeezed and the market turn into the seller's market:
"Quality, yeah, what about it? Spellcheck errors, Homonyms? Hey,. no problem, but what about your no-repeats expectations? And, what about your deadlines? Like paying on time? Make my day, you p*nk!"
Three strikes and you are out, dear agent. No platinum.

We're all in the feeding line connecting the problem (source) with the solution (target). I would just love to see some respect shown for the hard work we chip in. Preferably in the form of a respectable pay (g).
End of rant and regards

Since I joined in June, I have had about two new contacts per month, of which about 75% have turned into at least one job.
I like the increased traffic I've been seeing. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Platinum membership and the here-and-now factor Protemos translation business management system |
