Dear fellow translators and interpreters,

by now you have surely heard of the devastating earthquake in the city of L’Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy. It has made headline news around the world.

The quake killed over 285 people to date, injured hundreds more and destroyed thousands of buildings, leaving 50,000 homeless. A series of strong aftershocks since the main quake on monday have caused further damage, hampering rescue efforts and further terrorising the population in the town of L'Aquila and surrounding villages.

All translators and interpreters can help by donating money. Even the smallest amount is much appreciated. If every ProZ.com user/member donates only 1 dollar, the ProZ community can make a major contribution to the earthquake relief effort.

I have compiled a list of organizations (not complete, of course) with the help of our colleage Dragana Molnar M.A. How to donate:

Croce Rossa Italiana (Italian Red Cross)
IBAN IT66C0100503382000000218020
Swift Code - BNLIITRR
Cause: PRO TERREMOTO ABRUZZO

From Abruzzo Apr 10, 2009

There are many ProZ.com members and translators in Abruzzo. I am one of them.

We are safe and we are working to help those so badly affected but it will not be easy and it will be a lengthy process.

ProZ.com has decided to donate a percentage of the revenue from the Abruzzo Winespeak Weekend to the Red Cross L'Aquila fund:

The more of us there are, the more we can donate. But more than that, it is important for our tiny community (all of Abruzzo is only 1,000,000 people) to see visitors continuing to come and appreciate its beauty, its generosity and its dignified simplicity.

Our economy was already suffering the recession and now even tourism will be hit even though the coastal areas are safe.

Please don't forget us once the spotlights have gone out. If you've never been here, make this a reason to come. If you have been here, there is no need for me to tell you what wonderful place it is. Wonderful but needy. The isolation following a catastrophe is immense. Let's not let that happen.

Donations through PayPal Apr 11, 2009

Dear colleagues,

I'd like to add that donations to the Italian Red Cross can also be made through PayPal, which is probably more convenient than a wire transfer for those who live outside Europe.

These are the links:
