The confidence rating isn't something to worry about. For the majority of answers, I just put in a 3.

When it's a technical term, and I'm reasonably sure there is a "right" answer (very rare, in my experience), I'll offer a 4 or even a 5. When I'm not sure, 2 or 1.

Don't worry about what other people are doing with their ratings. Don't think about it in absolute terms. Think about it in your own terms. If you're answering a Kudoz question at all, you're already pretty

Don't worry about what other people are doing with their ratings. Don't think about it in absolute terms. Think about it in your own terms. If you're answering a Kudoz question at all, you're already pretty confident. So the range from 1 to 5 is really from "I think it's this" to "this is the answer, period". If your answers fall in a normal distribution (lots of threes, fewer 2s and 4s, very few 1s and 5s, then that's about right).

I Put Mostly 3 As Well Aug 19, 2012

"If your answers fall in a normal distribution (lots of threes, fewer 2s and 4s, very few 1s and 5s, then that's about right). "

I honestly do not think ours is a normal distribution at all. That is the problem. I usually witness lots of fives in ours (English-Turkish questions). So, ours is lots of fives, fewer fours, very few threes, almost no twos and ones. People tend to use the upper end of the scale a lot. Isn't that strange? To me it is.

Different way of approaching it Aug 19, 2012

I guess that comes from thinking about the scale in a different way. Like I say, if you're answering a Kudoz question at all, you're already pretty confident. I expect that's why people use 4 and 5 a lot. The problem is that 5s often offend people, and if you always put 4 or 5, you don't get the full use of the scale. That's why I prefer my way, using 3 as the default level unless there's good reason to go higher or lower.

Five versus Three Aug 19, 2012

I agree that fives tend to often offend people. I can certainly understand that, and that is partly why I use three most of the time. I think using three shows that you are modest, and have dignity. Being the middle of the scale, three is what common sense dictates. In fact, I will probably never use five unless I can walk on the water. I do use four and two from time to time though.

I don't think it is grading yourself Aug 19, 2012

I think instead that it is letting the asker know just how sure you are. For example, you answer a question with a term you know but are not 100% sure it fits to the case at hand. So do you not answer at all or do you make a suggestion anyway, but tell the person you are not totally sure. It gives them a place to research from and can be really helpful even if you are not sure. I think it is just a question of being honest. If you were talking to that translator you would probably say..."I've run into that term in this case and it is translated as xxx. It might work for you, too." The person can take it or leave it but it can prove really helpful. Sometimes I have received suggestions that were way off base (and the person had indicated a 2 or 3) but which sent me down the right path to find the term I really needed.

Not so strange, really. I tend not to suggest an answer at all unless I am very sure (4) or reasonably sure but have reservations or perhaps can see more than one possible answer (3).

If my confidence level is only 1 or 2, I might make a discussion entry but I probably wouldn't bother offering an answer. I don't use a confidence level of 5 because omniscience is not one of my strong suits.

Five by Default? Aug 19, 2012

Folks, my discomfort is really people who tend to use 5 by default. They use five over and over again. There are lots of them where I come from.

In my opinion, five should perhaps be reserved for people who can walk on water. At least, you have to be one hundred percent sure of your answer. Unfortunately, that is not the case in our KudoZ. People with much less than perfect answers tend to use five most of the t

People with much less than perfect answers tend to use five most of the time. When I use three, it looks as though their answer is superior whereas it is not. And guess what? It is often their answer that is chosen by the asker. This keeps going on and on.

Can't agree more here. Every time I come across the answerer who infallibly uses *5* as his confidence level I can't but feel sorry for the asker. Such "5-star" answers are occasionally helpful but almost always arrogant, if not outright ridiculous...

And yes, there are exceptions to the above, but they are way to scarce to even mention them ))

Used for the wrong purpose Feb 26, 2014

The problem is, tha level of confidence is being used for the wrong purpose, and not in a very ethical manner.

Point eaters are posting similar answers already posted with a higher level of confidence, so they'll be on top of the list. And the worse thing is: IT WORKS!

I just posted a new forum about this, and about how people should be fair when awarding brownieZ, and above all when awarding points for an answer.

We must check who entered the answer first when they are similar.
