Not all peers are honest
Feb 1, 2013
Last year I received a tinyURL link as comment to one of my proposals. Immediately a screen popped up and an "Anti-virus" appeared counting up to 260 "detected malwares". I switched off the computer, but the malware "AV-Soft" was still active. I had to call an IT specialist to clean my computer.
I highly discourage any peer to click on similar enciphered links, when he does not know the reputation of a peer and it's honesty as you never know what is behind that link.

Much ado about nothing
Feb 1, 2013
Using the tinyurl preview feature (as described in detail by Samuel) avoids the problem.
Of course, if the link was posted by a trusted person (i.e. someone you know from the forum and trust the judgement of) then you can just click the link.
Some URLs are so long that posting them in full is not a workable option esp. because they may get mangled.

That's far too polite. Alibaba is more like pig slurry (which kills many farmers annually).
It's a toxic pollutant in search results - the Google equivalent of email spam.
Note that many browsers allow you to filter out sites like that (and, to a lesser extent ebay.es) in their configuration page.

I use them because, when I try to copy/paste a long link into Kudoz, the field chops it off before the end and it doesn't work. I guess this is with the actual URL field.
Yes, Susan. I just tried to add a peer comment with a Google search page link (which was 395 characters long. I got the following error message: "Text is too long. Maximum number of characters allowed: 255"
Anyone worried about malware can use the preview function.
