Janaka commanded his ministers to bring the magnificent bow to
the presence of Vishwamitra. The bow was worshipped every day and was secured safely in an iron case. It was carted on an eight-wheeled carriage. Close to five thousand stalwarts were employed to drag it. When the iron casket containing the bow was opened, everybody stood up as a mark of respect to the bow of Mahadeva. King Janaka said, “This is the bow that nobody has ever been able to even lift up till now. My lord, I had laid down a condition that whosoever will lift this bow and string it, will win the hand of my daughter. Many princes came to see this bow but none was able to even move it.”
Vishwamitra who was attentively listening to the words of Janaka very politely told Rama, “My dear child Rama, go and string the bow.”
અનુવાદ - ગુજરાતી શ્રી રામે શિવજીનું ધનુષ્ય તોડ્યું
જનકે તેમના મંત્રીઓને વિશ્વામિત્રની હાજરીમાં વિશાળ ધનુષ્ય લાવવા કહ્યું. આ ધનુષ્યની પ્રતિ દિન પૂજા થતી હતી અને તેને એક લોખંડની પેટીમાં સુરક્ષિત રીતે રાખવામાં આવ્યું હતું. તેને આઠ પૈડાની ગાડી પર લાવવામાં આવ્યું. તેને ખેંચવા લગભગ પાંચ હજાર તગડા લોકોની જરૂર પડી હતી. જ્યારે ધનુષ્ય ધરાવતી લોખંડની પેટી ખોલવામાં આવી ત્યારે મહાદેવના ધનુષ્યના માનમાં ઉપસ્થિત તમામ લોકો ઊભા થઈ ગયા. રાજા જનકે કહ્યું, “અત્યાર સુધીમાં આ ધનુષ્યને કોઈ ઉઠાવી પણ શક્યું નથી. પ્રભુ, મેં શરત રાખી છે કે જે કોઈ આ ધનુષ્યને ઉઠાવી દેશે અને તેની પ્રત્યંચા ચડાવી દેશે તે મારી પુત્રીનો હાથ મેળવશે. અનેક રાજકુમારો આવ્યા પણ કોઈ તેને હલાવવા પણ સમર્થ બન્યું નથી.”
જનક રાજાના શબ્દો ખૂબ જ ધ્યાનથી સાંભળી રહેલા વિશ્વામિત્રે ખૂબ જ મંદ સ્વરે નમ્રતાથી શ્રી રામને કહ્યું, “મારા વહાલા બાળ રામ, જાવ અને ધનુષ્યની પ્રત્યંચા ચડાવો.”
