English to Thai: Extracts from the speech made in December 2004 by Lord Hoffman, member of the Appellate Committee of the House of Lords General field: Law/Patents Detailed field: Law (general)
Source text - English My Lords,
I have had the advantage of reading in draft the speech of my noble and learned friend Lord Bingham of Cornhill and I gratefully adopt his statement of the background to this case and the issues which it raises. This is one of the most important cases which the House has had to decide in recent years. It calls into question the very existence of an ancient liberty of which this country has until now been very proud: freedom from arbitrary arrest and detention. The power which the Home Secretary seeks to uphold is a power to detain people indefinitely without charge or trial. Nothing could be more antithetical to the instincts and traditions of the people of the United Kingdom.
Source text - English What Exactly Is Artificial Intelligence?
If someone asked you what your definition of AI or artificial intelligence was, what would you say?
Artificial intelligence is a complex topic. For that reason, there are several definitions that you might encounter. Here is one of the most accurate ones by Google:
“The theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence, such a visual perception, speech recognition, decision making, and translation between languages.”
In my own seminars, I try to keep things simple, defining AI as using computers to do things that normally require human intelligence. For a more detailed and complete definition, however, I personally like this one from the online publication Quartz:
“Artificial intelligence is software or a computer program with a mechanism to learn. It then uses that knowledge to make a decision in a new situation, as humans do. The researchers building this software try to write code that can read images, text, video, or audio, and learn something from it. Once a machine has learned, that knowledge can be put to use elsewhere.”
In other words, we might say that AI is the ability of machines to use algorithms to learn from data, and use what has been learned to make decisions like a human would. Unlike humans, though, AI-powered machines don’t need to take breaks or rest and they can analyse massive volumes of information all at once. The ratio of errors is also significantly lower for machines that perform the same tasks as their human counterparts.

Source text - English HOW THIS WORLDWIDE LEDGER WORKS?
Big banks and some governments are implementing blockchain as distributed ledgers to revolutionise the way information is stored and transactions occur. Their goals are laudable—speed, lower cost, security, fewer errors, and the elimination of central points of attack and failure. These models don’t necessarily involve a cryptocurrency for payments.
Every ten minutes, like the heartbeat of the bitcoin network, all the transactions conducted are verified, cleared, and stored in a block which is linked to the preceding block, thereby creating a chain. Each block must refer to the preceding block to be valid. This structure permanently timestamps and stores exchanges of value, preventing anyone from altering the ledger. If you wanted to steal a bitcoin, you’d have to rewrite the coin’s entire history on the blockchain in broad daylight.
That’s practically impossible. So the blockchain is a distributed ledger representing a network consensus of every transaction that has ever occurred. Like the World Wide Web of information, it’s the World Wide Ledger of value-a distributed ledger that everyone can download and run on their personal computer.
However, the most important and far-reaching blockchains are based on Satoshi’s bitcoin model. Here’s how they work.
Bitcoin or other digital currency isn’t saved in a file somewhere; it’s represented by transactions recorded in a blockchain—kind of like a global spreadsheet or ledger, which leverage the resources of a large peer-to-peer bitcoin network to verify and approve each bitcoin transaction. Each blockchain, like the one that uses bitcoin, is distributed: it runs on computers provided by volunteers around the world: there is no central database to hack.
The blockchain is public: anyone can view it at any time because it resides on the network, not within a single institution charged with auditing transactions and keeping records. And the blockchain is encrypted: it uses heavy-duty encryption involving public and private keys (rather like the two-key system to access a safety deposit box) to maintain virtual security. You needn’t worry about the weak firewall of Target or Home Depot or a thriving staffer of Morgan Stanley or the U.S. federal government

Source text - English Are You An Intelligent Investor?
Now let’s answer a vitally important question. What exactly does Graham mean by an “intelligent” investor? Back in the first edition of this book, Graham defines the term—and he makes it clear that this kind of intelligence has nothing to do with IQ or SAT scores. It simply means being patient, disciplined, and eager to learn; you must also be able to harness your emotions and think for yourself. This kind of intelligence, explains Graham, “is a trait more of the character than of the brain.”
There’s proof that high IQ and higher education are not enough to make an investor intelligent. In 1998 Long-Term Capital Management LP, a hedge fund run by a battalion of mathematicians, computer scientist, and two Nobel Prize-winning economists, lost more than $2 billion in a matter of weeks on a huge bet that the bond market would return to “normal.” But the bond market kept right on becoming more and more abnormal-and LTCM had borrowed so much money that its collapse nearly capsized the global financial system.
And back in the spring of 1720, Sir Isaac Newton owned shares in the South Sea Company, the hottest stock in England. Sensing that the market was getting out of hand, the great physicist muttered that he could “calculate the motions of the heavenly bodies, but not the madness of the people.” Newton dumped his South Sea shares, pocketing a 100% profit totalling £7,000. But just month later, swept up in the wild enthusiasm of the market, Newton jumped back in at a much higher price-and lost £20,000 (or more than $3 million in today’s money). For the rest of his life, he forbade anyone to speak the words “South Sea” in his presence.”

Source text - English How climate change affects biodiversity
Climate change is likely to have a number of impacts on biodiversity - from ecosystem to species level. The most obvious impact is the effect that flooding, sea level rise and temperature changes will have on ecosystem boundaries, allowing some ecosystems to expand into new areas, while others diminish in size. As well as shifting ecosystem boundaries, these changes will also cause changes in natural habitat - an outcome which will have a knock-on effect on species survival.
The impact of climate change on biodiversity will vary from region to region. The most rapid changes in climate are expected in the far north and south of the planet, and in mountainous regions. These are also the regions where species often have no alternative habitats to which they can migrate in order to survive. Other vulnerable ecosystems and species include small populations or those restricted to small areas. Coral reefs have already shown devastating losses as result of increased water temperatures.

Music to the ears-and more
Since the invention of the compact disc, the music industry has trumpeted the advantage of digital music. “Analog is history,” the refrain went. In recent years, more and more audiophiles are rediscovering vinyl and tape, and the subtleties digital music can never duplicate. To appreciate these differences, higher quality equipment is required to play and broadcast it, and this is most significant in the choice of speakers.
Carbon fiber has found application in the cones of many high-performance speakers, either as a paper or light woven fabric. But Wilson Benesch Ltd. (Sheffield, U.K.) has taken carbon fibre to an entirely new level. Founded in 1989, the company’s first products included a carbon-fibre turntable and a torsionally stiff carbon-fibre tone-arm. Building on this technical success, Wilson Benesch introduced the first of its line of speakers in 1994, relying on carbon fire’s structural properties in the external housing of the speaker to provide improved damping and sound quality, giving buyers a purer listening experience.

Translation - English Real World Marketing with ‘With Me’ VDOs
In 2020, it seems that VDO marketing has become the number one trend for creating customer accessibility and attracting participation, beating other types of media. This trend has been reflected in data from Hootsuite, which found that global internet users spend more than 90% of their time online watching VDO. With such a strong trend, what are the genres of VDOs that entrepreneurs should not overlook?
In the past, most people would think that VDOs are for entertainment purposes only. In reality, we often make use of VDOS to help us achieve various things. We are probably most familiar with how-to VDOs. However, they are not the only genre of VDOs the people utilize. Some VDOs inspire viewers to learn new things and encourage them to get up and follow what is shown on VDOs, even though they are merely everyday activities.
This type of everyday activity VDOs is called the ‘With me’ genre. We may have run into this type of VDOs before. They have been very popular overseas. The ‘With me’ VDOs may be live-streaming or recorded into VDO clips, for viewers to see the everyday activities of another person. The length of the VDOs can be anything from a few minutes to many hours.

Translation - English From the COVID-19 crises, the SET Index has declined sharply. Most investors are faced with loss situation. They tend to think that it is because they select the stocks poorly or their investing timings are not appropriate. However, the truth is that money management and risk management are the most important factors in our investment.
Why do we need money management in stock trading?
We don’t know in advance how the trading will turn out. It can be a profit or loss. Therefore, we need to manage risk and limit the risk each time we trade, to limit the loss.
2. There are always opportunities to invest. No one knows for sure whether the time we decide to trade is a good opportunity, how much the stock price will go up, and how fast. If the investments result in loss, a large continuous loss will affect our entire investment resource. Therefore, we need to distribute our opportunities in trading with money management in each trade.
Why we should not spend all in one trade?
Suppose we have 100 baht if the loss is 10% or 10 Baht, we will have 90 Baht left. If we want the 90 Baht money to grow back to 100 Baht as before, we need to make a profit of 11.11% from the 90 Baht to go back to the same amount of money as before.
Note that once we incur a loss, to make the money grow back the same amount as before it takes a great deal of effort. If we let the loss occur exceeding 50%, we will have half of the investment money left. We need to make a profit of 100% to grow the money back to the original amount. This is the reason that we need to limit the risk and should not spend all the money on one trade.

Translation - English Status of Thailand’s Research, Development, and Know-hows Support in the Electric Vehicles Industry
In Thailand, there are researchers, specializing in various areas such as battery development, energy management system, motor&propulsion systems, and light-weight materials, that can be applied in electric vehicles. These researchers work mostly in government research institutes and educational institutions around the country. They are experts in R&D of electric vehicle parts and equipment in up, mid and downstream parts of the industry. The R&D and know-how support in the electric vehicles industry of Thailand can be divided into:
4.1 Battery and Energy Management System for Electric Vehicles in Thailand
Considering the current status of battery manufacturer in Thailand, most battery manufacturers produce acid lead types, used for starting vehicles. The minority of the manufacturers make deep cycle batteries, which can be utilized as the electrical power storage source.
Batteries that are suitable for electric vehicles should have the following properties: high energy storage capacity, low mass and volume, high safety level, and can be designed for appropriate utilization in electric vehicles. The World Market for electric vehicles prefers lithium batteries over the lead-acid ones. However, the international Lithium battery manufacturers have a long history of developing high-level technology, with high market share. It is difficult for Thai manufacturers to compete.
In the past, Thailand’s R&Ds in battery and energy management systems focus on battery cell part manufacturing, battery designs, and applications in various areas. Considering the value chain of batteries for electric vehicles, Boston Consulting Group has classified steps for battery manufacturing into 7 steps: 1) part manufacturing (including materials) 2) cell manufacturing 3) module manufacturing 4) module assembly and packing into batteries 5) packing battery into the electric vehicles. 6) battery utilization and 7) battery reuse (diagram 4-1).
