Swedish term

stolpficka

Swedish to English Other Textiles / Clothing / Fashion Details of winter jacket
Bredvid knäppslån finns fickor med blixtlås, fickorna är stolpfickor med öppningen framåt.
These are pockets on the front of a winter jacket next to the placket. They are at chest height and have a vertical zipped opening. Can anyone tell me what this type of pocket is called in English?

Found this definition Welt Pocket: found usually on a jacket chest, this type of pocket is set in to the jacket, rather than applied onto it

pocket with vertical cutting

This is what it is, but you may find a better term. Eg, vertical pocket.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Anna Herbst : Doesn't have to be vertical - http://linafelicia.wordpress.com/2012/08/17/stolpficka-till-... //Det är inte ofta SAOL har fel, men en gång är ingen gång... bröstfickan på en kavaj är ofta en stolpficka och den är horisontell.

According to SAOL it does, ie, 'med lodrätt skärning'. So SAOL is wrong according to Anna. No modesty there. When will SAOL correct its mistake?

Napoleon pocket

In practice I would probably just call them chest pockets with vertical zips / zippers.
However, I have seen these called Napoleon pockets to distinguish them from all the other varieties of patch pockets, bellows pockets, pen pockets and whatever else can be attached at chest level.

(Scroll down about half way to where details are described)

There’s a napoleon pocket on the chest with a media port that’s been a happy haven for my iPhone. Also, inside the napoleon pocket is a lens wipe conveniently attached to a stretchy cord for wiping fog and rain off the glasses.

neutral Anna Herbst : A Napoleon pocket is on the left side only - http://www.jacketreviews.com/Jacket-School/Napoleon-Pocket
