@all I wanted to put this in the glossary but I entered it as "completed or discontinued (not sure)" and had to give points to one person chosen "randomly" on the flip of a coin to do this. Thanks everyone for your input.

@Matt and all Well, at least that makes me feel better about having doubts cos I think we really needed a Swedish take on this, even if it's inconclusive. Thanks

It just seems to get more and more confusing! I showed the question to my Swedish ex this morning and not even she was sure which sense of the word was the right one, completed or discontinued. It's hard to know whether it's avslutad by the school (discontinued) or avslutad by the pupil/class (completed). Perhaps research the Skolverket website some more, but my feeling is that 'completed' would be the best cover-all translation :)

@ all Hello
With Charlesp's answer, I'm back to square 1. Has the course been completed or discontinued? I think we are all Anglophones. Is there a native Swede who can say or is the verb ambiguous without further context?
Thanks to everyone who has answered so far

already completed/no longer studied

According to the referenced pages, an 'avslutat ämne' has is no longer being studied or has been completed in an earlier term. So 'completed' covers it I guess, you may want to consider expanding a bit.
Peer comment(s):

agree Deane Goltermann : Completed, nothing else! I double checked with my in-house consultant on this one...she tells me 'incomplete' = 'o' avslutat, which kinda makes sense in a Swedish sort of way.

Tough one this, still not 100% sure but thanks for the agree Deane :)
agree Helen Johnson : Discontinued would surely be another word, wouldn't it?

It depends whether it's been avslutat by the school system or by the pupil I think, really hard one this! Fanx for the agree anyway :)

If it had said that the student had avslutats, I would say that it was "completed" (i.e. degree programme)
