Discussion

Muriel Vasconcellos Jan 27, 2010:
"leucemia linfoblastica aguda" also exists The term with "linfoblastica" also exists in Spanish (81,200 hits for ["leucemia linfoblastica']). The author had the option of using it and chose not to. That's another reason why I prefer 'lymphocytic'.
Muriel Vasconcellos Jan 27, 2010:
Criteria In the work I do, ICD trumps NCI. The terms in the ICD are agreed on after consultation with all the countries. The USPHS version of the ICD, for example, differs slightly and we were instructed not to use it in translations for the World Health Organization. Obviously there is some hair-splitting going on here and the difference can't be that important. This is a good example of the importance of deciding on and sticking to the references to be followed.
From the NCI Dictionary of Cancer Terms acute lymphoblastic leukemia
An aggressive (fast-growing) type of leukemia (blood cancer) in which too many lymphoblasts (immature white blood cells) are found in the blood and bone marrow. Also called acute lymphocytic leukemia and ALL.

Actually, they are Acute lymphocytic leukemia != acute exacerbation of CLL.
Chronic leukemias can have phases in which the disease "behaves" as an acute leukemia (in the myeloid leukemias, this is known as a "blast crisis"). The underlying entity is still entirely different from acute leukemia.
See e.g. this old study: http://content.karger.com/ProdukteDB/produkte.asp?Doi=207150
Muriel Vasconcellos Jan 27, 2010:
Not synonymous after all? I have pasted in a section from the latest International Classification of Diseases, published by the World Health Organization (ICD-10) in my answer below (so that the columns will show). It appears that the two diseases may not be not synonymous after all. Notice C91.0 and C91.1, where "acute lymphoblastic leukemia excludes acute exacerbation of chronic lymphocytic leukemia."

According to this classification, 'acute lymphocytic leukemia' would really be: 'acute exacerbation of chronic lymphocytic leukemia'

neutral Muriel Vasconcellos : My latest discovery - checking with ICD-10 (duh!) - trumps my previous comments. I don't think they're synonymous after all.

Hi Muriel! True, but "lymphoblastic" is used (and recommended) by the National Cancer Institute, which is my usual source. I get +2m hits for "lymphoblastic" and -800k for "lymphocytic".

I am now no longer certain that the two terms are synonymous. Below is an extract from the International Classification of Diseases, 10th rev.

C91 Lymphoid leukaemia
Includes: morphology codes M982, M9940-M9941 with behaviour code /3
C91.0 Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia
Excludes: acute exacerbation of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia ( C91.1 )
C91.1 Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia
C91.2 Subacute lymphocytic leukaemia
C91.3 Prolymphocytic leukaemia
C91.4 Hairy-cell leukaemia
Leukaemic reticuloendotheliosis
C91.5 Adult T-cell leukaemia
C91.7 Other lymphoid leukaemia
C91.9 Lymphoid leukaemia, unspecified
Peer comment(s):

agree Filippe Vasconcellos de Freitas Guimarães : sure, synonymous and widely used //Yeah, so was mine! :) "a. lymphoblastic leukemia" vs. "a. lymphocytic leukemia", in quotes... I did leave out "pediatric", though. //Yep. And you were right the first time around: they are certainly synonyms.

Thanks, Filippe! My search was for the whole string, not just the words "lymphocytic" vs. "lymphoblastic". Hmm... And you used Google?
