thank you all for your suggestions! All dully registered!
Muriel Vasconcellos Jun 19, 2005:
I found 4 references on Google searching on {"water buffalo farming"+Brazil], and yes, they do farm water buffalo there.
Non-ProZ.com Jun 19, 2005:
Well this is a text about Brazil, so I am guessing they are talking about water buffalo...
Muriel Vasconcellos Jun 19, 2005:
Where? The place is important. In the US, "buffalo ranching" would apply. Whereas American buffalo (bison) are raised for eating (hence "-culture"), water buffalo were not until recently. However, it appears that this is a new trend in Australia.

buffalo ranching/buffalo production

For Africa or Asia, water buffalo is appropriate. If it's American, you just say buffalo. Ranching refers to the entire scope of the endeavor (managing the grassland, etc) - buffalo production is more specific to the management of the animal's growth

disagree airmailrpl : for USA 'buffalo' is a 'bison' ..a different animal..and not a 'water buffalo' which is a 'bubalino'

you are right in that bison is specifically north american . . but bison and bufflo are used interchangeably - and (from the perspecitve of someone who grew up and lives once again on the great plains) the more commonly used term is buffalo.
neutral Muriel Vasconcellos : I agree with all that you say. But I did some research and found that water buffalo are being farmed in Brazil.
