n his perceptive book, **The Household Economy**, the American writer Scott Burns (1977) ... **The household economy can be defined as the productive activities .conducted by households using household capital and the unpaid labour of their own members to process goods and provide services for their own use**. It includes the preparation of food and meals, laundry and house cleaning, child care, shopping, household repairs and maintenance, gardening and other household tasks. The production from the household economy is often called non-market production, but this can be misleading as all the types of goods and services produced can be obtained from the market economy as alternatives to being produced at home. Also, non-market household production is often defined to include voluntary work done for other households or community groups..

Looking at your context again, I would say:
"...most of them small and medium-sized properties operated on the basis of household economies."
"...most of them household-economy-based small and medium-sized properties"
I think the size of the property and the type of economy are separate concepts.

Or better: "...most of them household-economy small and medium-sized..."In your context, this is a fancy way of saying "family-run," which wouldn't be wrong -- simply less "official."

house economy or house keeping
Netherlands, Agricultural University, Wageningen: Problem-oriented study of how people live in their everyday environment or household; how this is influenced by economic, social, technological and political developments; how households in turn influence society; and how scientific knowledge can be applied to solving problems in the home. Could also be called 'domestic science', but Wageningen prefers 'home economics

Example sentence:
The Family Economy is a term we use to describe products, goods, and services, mostly produced in the home and where the workforce consists of family members. It is the most basic but most hidden element of the pre-industrial community economy.
