Well, they do extract serpentine stone = grey/green colour

from the area of Castellaccio

si tratta di termini siciliani. Le balate sono genericamente pietre piatte, per esempio per lastricare, ma anche per il piano di un tavolo. La certezza mi è data dall'aver consultato un'amica siciliana doc.
