"i giochi sono fatti"

Italian to English Other Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
Arriva l'alto commissariato contro il falso Made in Italy......La comunicazione ufficiale dovrebbe arrivare a giorni, ma secondo La Stampa ''ormai i giochi sono fatti''.

Could this be translated as "the damage has already been done"??

thanks kate

PS do I need to give more context or is this enough?

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Aug 31, 2005:
Thanks everyone! I must say I found it really hard to make a decision on this one. I chose "the game is up" as it retains the "game idea" as stated by Lindsay and, taking into consideration the comments made by Vittorio and others, is not as negative and implies that something will now be done and to a certain extent that everything "is in place" for this to happen. I like the "cards are on the table" idea but then decided that maybe this conveys more the idea that there are no more secrets and that everything is out in the open.

Thank you

In this context the Italian way of saying does not keep the "negative" meaning of "something irreparably done" which it usually conveys. Here it just means that everything has already been sorted out and decided.

Hi,

Some feedback from others would be good as I can't decide which answer would be best.

Italian term (edited): i giochi sono fatti

all is in place

beyond the words: here "i giochi son fatti" means simply that provision have been made to take active steps against false "Made in Italy" claims. All is in place to combat counterfeits. It is too obvious that nothing can be done about the past and the situation is far from irreparable.
Peer comment(s):

agree Leonardo Marcello Pignataro (X) : "Everything is set and ready". There's no meaning of an irreparable situation in this context, you're right
