Quasi al limite occidentale del Golfo di Cadice, a poca distanza da Capo San Vincenzo, sfocia un piccolo fiume, il Rio Besafrim, che allora, come molti altri corsi d'acqua lungo la stessa costa, prima di gettarsi nell'oceano, formava un ampio bacino molto articolato e dalle rive sfrangiate - poi bonificato e trasformato in un porticciolo, - nel quale la marea mescolava di continuo le sue acque con quelle salse del mare.
