Although I think it is best to veer away from the "dialogue" idea the Italian often uses in these cases, I don't think it hurts to use some personification (i.e. styles in pursuit of something) - if you can call it that - for the sake of conveying the idea. I have tried to use words which evoke the exact idea here - and also tried to give some alternative forms of the meaning.
