Italian term
culturalizzare
Italian to English
Art/Literary
Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
art criticism
I know what it means but am looking for a word or expression that would better convey the idea in English - I am not convinced by ' culturalize' here. Perhaps 'intellectualize' or 'bring an intellectual dynamic to his work'?? All suggestions welcome.
Context: ' ...superata la metà del decennio l’artista sottende una nuova motivazione alla sua pittura figurativa, ossia la necessità di culturalizzare l’opera inserendola continuamente in tematiche filosofiche, scientifiche ed economiche di pregnante attualità

fine-tune / refine
perhaps adapt his work to current affairs etc or make his work more sophisticated
another idea that came to mind is : bring in to his work a sense of culture (or something equivalent to culture like you said dynamism or sophistication)
just some ideas - the question is interesting

situating
"contextualize" is good; "situate" might work as well, something like: "situating his/her work within contemporary philosophical, scientific and economic themes"
