This is from a text on organic farming. I am not sure that 'lean patures' is quite right, and writing a description (pastures on slopes etc) seems a long-winded translation.
Has anybody come across this expression in English before?

My hard copy of the Wörterbuch der Landwirtschaft (or Dictionary or Agriculture) also has this translated as rough pasture or ranching (US EN).

One more definition comes from a concise booklet also called Dictionary of Agriculture (A & C Black, London 2006), which provides the following definition for rough grazing: 'unimproved grazing, found in mountain, heath and moorland areas.'
