German term

Leitaroma

German to English Other Wine / Oenology / Viticulture
In a blurb for a book on wine-tasting:

Der Einführungsteil vermittelt alles Wissenswerte zum richtigen Degustieren: Wein-Einkauf, Lagerung, Öffnen und Dekantieren des Weins sowie alles über das richtige Verkosten. Ein Farbleitsystem ermöglicht nicht nur die schnelle Orientierung im Buch, sondern gibt auf einen Blick Auskunft über *Leitaromen* und Weinstil der beschriebenen Weine.

Is there a standard term for this in English, or if not, can anyone suggest a nice translation? Thanks.

Primary aroma

My wife worked for years at a vineyard. I'll look for a reference in a sec.

I'm not saying that it shouldn't have a strong aroma but the word means light or mild aroma
neutral Kim Metzger : Why do you think the prefix Leit- means light or mild?

reference aroma

Based on the way the German term is used below, I think the prefix Leit- means reference, guide, something to orient oneself on, what the taste reminds you of.

If, for example, we wish to describe a particular aroma, we must resort to comparisons with known aromas. If can't compare the aroma to another one or if the person to whom we are describing the aroma has never smelled the reference aroma, we are in trouble.

Faults in Wine
This set warrants a special mention. It contains 12 reference odours to help you recognise and identify the phenomena that can contaminate wine. The reference aromas in the phials are directly linked to the molecular composition of faulty wines.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Steven Sidore : I asked my wife (the expert) about this, Kim, she says they're not the same. Think of buying paint: the paint you get may be primarily blue or whatever, and that's how you'd describe it, but its reference colors are the numbered ones used to mix it.
