German term

Terroir

German to English Marketing Wine / Oenology / Viticulture Attempt to describe uniqueness of certain wines
It is about an initiative named "terroir f" (small case) standing for Terroir Franken

This term is being used in an attempt to attract tourists or wine-lovers to parts of Franconia. Famous wine varietes and wine-growing communities are asked to establish special (magisch) viewpoints. See the blurb here:

http://www.franken-weinland.de/erlebnis/terroir-f/

I want to be able to explain this in English when I take groups of tourists to our local viewpoint, and for this I need a term for terroir or at least the reassurance that I can use the original French.

In this PPT quite near the beginning there is an attempt to define and translate "terroir" but to be honest I don't really understand it.

Could any winegrowing expert among KudoZ colleagues tell me what terminology to use with tourists who may OR may not have knowledge of oenology?

Thanks for all this... Thanks for all the info, I'm just started to go through it!
Regarding how much detail I want to have, the answer is that I am not so much translating as interpreting, i.e. I intend to tell my tourists as much as they are interested in, so there is no restriction at all.

Another idea Terroir, the elusive, essential spirit in......

Terroir defines the character of a region's wine by being the region itself. It's a mystery. How much detail do you want to offer?
Aisha Prigan (X) Feb 7, 2014:
Terroir is a difficult term to define because it encompasses so many elements. It refers to a wine expressing a "sense of place" as well as to the specific climatic and soil conditions that characterize a winegrowing area. Check out Jamie Goode's take on terroir in his book "The Science of Wine": http://books.google.es/books?id=9hCk1J_5ozIC&pg=PA25&lpg=PA2...
Ramey Rieger (X) Feb 7, 2014:
Hi Diana! It is always nice to give tourists some special knowledge to take home with them. I would leave it in French, but add an appealing, yet singular, description. "the magical spirit in Franconian wine", " the sum total of Franconian wines" "the essence of the Franconian wine sanctuary", etc. Good luck and happy translating!

the geoanthropological "sense" of regions:

some ideas Terroir: The mixture of natural conditions (geology, micro-climate, ...) and geoanthropological factors (grape variety, artisan abilities, ...) - the combined thumbprint of man and nature.

Perhaps even something like a "unique regional signature" or "essential regional signature"
Peer comment(s):

agree Aisha Prigan (X) : No exact translation exists in English and wine writers commonly use the French term.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you, everyone, for shedding some light on this complex topic. I now know what to say when explaining the term and will use an English-sounding approximation to the correct French pronunciation (as in "resterrannt"."
