The little bird is hurt and falling in a spiral trajectory.
Discussion
"in a twirl" doesn't necessarily mean "twirling" and twirling doesn't mean "hovering" at all. Different motion. Is it actually falling down or does it just look like that?
When "Kitty" and "drip, drip" is added to the mix, as Mark has said, it seems to add tension: a cat waiting to pounce on a bird and sending the bird into a panic...
