Basel Committee on Banking Supervision states as one of the ten Principles in the ‘Sound Practices for the Management and Supervision of Operational Risk’ (July 2002): ‘These indicators should be reviewed on a periodic basis (often monthly or quarterly) to alert banks to changes that may be indicative of risk concerns’.
A Key Risk Indicator Report should be compiled in such a way that it helps to:
- Improve the controllability of the business
- Mitigate (operational) risks
- Focus (day-to-day) management attention on maintaining (operational) risks within acceptable levels.
- Give an ‘at a glance’ analysis and recognition of metrics of interest
- Create behavioral change and forces action by management, and finally
- Is easily accessible and understandable to its intended audience.
