cigarra „dog-day“ (Tibicen spp.) OU APENAS: cigarra „dog-day“

Várias espécies do gênero Tibicen são conhecidas por “DOG-DAY CICADA

A abreviatura "sp." (zoologia) ou "spec." (botânica) é usada quando o nome da espécie não pode ou não interessa ser explicitado. A abreviatura "spp." (plural) indica "várias espécies".

Sugestão:

cigarra „Dog-day“ (Tibicen spp.)
ou apenas
cigarra „Dog-day

“Most of the North American species are in the genus Tibicen: the annual or jar fly or dog-day cicadas (so named because they emerge in late July and August). [1] The best-known North American genus is Magicicada, however. These periodical cicadas have an extremely long life cycle of 13 to 17 years and emerge in large numbers.[1] Another American species is the Apache cicada, Diceroprocta apache.“

Common Name: Annual Cicada
Scientific Name: Tibicen pruinosa
A.K.A.: The Harvestfly

The length of time most cicadas spend underground varies from 2 to 5 years, so some emerge every summer. == One of the common annual, tree-dwelling cicadas is also known as the Dog Day Cicada, because they are active in the "DOG DAYS" of late summer when the star Sirius is prominent in the night sky. == Sirius is the brightest star in the sky and is part of the Big Dog (Canis Major) constellation, which may be seen in the southeast quadrant of the sky in the northern hemisphere. DOG DAY CICADAS are about 1 3/4 inches long.
The following sequence of photos shows the emergence of a Dog Day Cicada one night in the summer of 2010. The photos were taken by Jim Dolbee and are used here by permission. One hour and 23 minutes elapsed from the time it broke through its larval shell to the last photo shown. Notice how the colors of the adult exoskeleton don't appear right away.

Dogday Harvestfly ("Tibicen canicularis")

The Dogday Harvestfly is in the Cicada Family. There are many different species of cicadas, but this one can be seen every year, while some other species are only seen every few years. Some cicada species are only seen every 13 or 17 years!
The Dogday Harvestfly is black with green markings. It also has green wings which stretch over three inches when spread. The body of this cicada is a little over an inch long.
Dogday Harvestflies are seen in late Summer. More often they are heard. Their loud call sounds like an electric saw. This is the sound of male cicadas calling for the females. Different species of cicadas have different sounds. Dogday Harvestflies only sing during the day.
These cicadas live in woods with either deciduous trees (ones that lose their leaves in the Fall) or pine trees.
This insect gets its name because it is seen and heard during the "Dog days of Summer," when it is most hot.
