Lucy wanted to be a teacher and she went to college off and on throughout the years. But it would depend on the money situation. They financially weren’t well off. That’s because Paul can’t seem to hold down a job.
Paul worked a series of jobs throughout his career but he could be a bit of a hothead and a bit domineering and he got fired 17 times from different jobs.
And at the end of the day it’s Lucy who has to bear the brunt of Paul’s volatile personality.
Não acredito que a tradução literal funcione aqui e também não acho que flui naturalmente neste caso a expressão "no fim das contas". Agradeço as sugestões.

Só uma sugestão já que você não quer usar a expressão "no fim das contas", embora eu ache que ela cabe ao contexto.
