A specimen subsequently selected from the paratypes to serve as the holotype in the absence of the bona fide holotype. A single specimen subsequently selected from a cotype or syntype series; equivalent of a holotype.

Sminthopsis fuliginosus is een buidelmuis uit het geslacht Sminthopsis die voorkomt in het zuidwesten van West-Australië. Deze soort is slechts bekend van het lectotype, BMNH 44.2.15.20, dat in de 19e eeuw in West-Australië is gevangen, waarschijnlijk in de buurt van de rivier de Avon. S. fuliginosus is lange tijd tot de gewone smalvoetbuidelmuis (S. murina) gerekend, maar wordt sinds de jaren '80 van de 20e eeuw als een aparte soort gezien. Soms is een auteur vergeten om een holotype aan te wijzen binnen de type-serie. In dat geval mag iemand anders later één van de exemplaren aanwijzen als lectotype. (Natuurhistorisch Museum Maastricht)
