After the disappointing 1999 results, Rybkin returned to the project of building a broad alliance. In April 2001, he and Spiritual Heritage leader Aleksei Podberezkin issued an appeal advocating a center-left alternative to the Communist Party. Rybkin attended the founding congress of former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev's Social Democratic Party of Russia (SDPR) in November 2001, but decided not to join that venture.
