One can use the example of a potassium feldspar grain in an altering granite.

Initially the altering fluids will be under saturated in potassium compared to feldspar which is the most potassium - rich mineral in the rock.

As the feldspar is destabilized, some silica is lost to the solution since it is the most silica - rich mineral, other than the chemically inert mineral quartz.

This is shown in Fig. 2.3, which is a chemiographic projection of mineral compositional relations.
