As an aside, "dricka" was used for beer, especially low alcohol beer, "svagdricka", in the 20th century, and on land, as well.

agree Deane Goltermann : In the 1700s beer for Swedish sailors, the Brits did rum/grog (grog is diluted and sweetened rum) tho they seem to have used beer early in the century. I think the US did grog. Lots of fun reading on this.so think the Americans did. Michael Ellis ca help?
