French term

cabinet d'expertise (d'art)

French to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting job description
I'm (rather oddly) having trouble finding a good translation for this.
I have found 'art appraisal firm' so far but am not very happy with it.
This is a Paris based firm, where the person works as a 'marchande et gestionnaire'.

Discussion

Charles Davis Sep 3, 2017:
@Helen Your own expertise is not in doubt (from my point of view), but I don't think it can be reasonably denied that this term is not invariably used in the sense in which you are used to finding and using it.
Helen Shiner Sep 3, 2017:
@Charles Not my 'views', but, in fact, my expertise. I have worked for years to prepare a catalogue raisonné of a sculptor's works, as well working as a translator for museums and auction houses, where 'expertises' are regularly used and discussed.
Charles Davis Sep 3, 2017:
@Helen OK, thanks for your views and good luck with your deadline.
Helen Shiner Sep 3, 2017:
@Charles My information was given to assist ormiston, not because it is relevant to the term posted. An expertise as a noun is different to un rapport d'expertise, I'm sure you'll agree. I have to leave it here; I am very busy with a deadline approaching.
Charles Davis Sep 3, 2017:
@Helen Yes, of course, but the point I'm raising is whether the term "expertise" always means a certificate of authenticity or whether it can also mean a condition report. It looks to me as though it can. More generally, in relation to the question asked, it looks to me as though a cabinet d'expertise doesn't only authenticate artworks (primarily for potential purchasers) but also produces reports on their condition (for loans, insurance, etc., and perhaps also for restoration purposes).

"Rapport d'expertise :
Ce document établit un constat d'état de l'oeuvre et peut comporter des recommandations en vue de la restauration de l'oeuvre (si applicable)."

"Constat d'état
Exemple d'expertise pour une institution publique"

Helen Shiner Sep 3, 2017:
@Charles A condition report is a condition report, and a certificate of authenticity is a certificate of authenticity. They are produced for differing reasons.
Charles Davis Sep 3, 2017:
@Helen The firm from whose website I took that quotation calls that sort of "expertise" a "constat d'état": a condition report. So apparently "expertise" can mean that too.
Helen Shiner Sep 3, 2017:
@Charles They are called certificates, however long. Some will include a photograph or several.
Charles Davis Sep 3, 2017:
So it's apparently not just a piece of paper certifying that this picture was painted by X, but an expert report on the work's state of conservation, restorations done, etc. To me, "appraisal" seems to cover this best.
Charles Davis Sep 3, 2017:
@Helen Thank you from me too. I didn't know that "expertise" had that specific meaning. I found this:

@ormiston My pleasure :)
ormiston (asker) Sep 3, 2017:
thank you for your prompt reassuring answer!
Helen Shiner Sep 3, 2017:
2 An expertise is a 'certificate of authenticity'. Here's a useful Q&A type thing explaining who is able to issue them with any kind of credibility: http://www.artbusiness.com/certaut.html It might help you.
Helen Shiner Sep 3, 2017:
@ormiston Art appraisal services should be fine. That's what it's usually called.

Selected

art appraisal firm

Here's an example of one, and what it does. They tell you how much your art is worth and how to sell it.
You could also say art consultancy.

Firm expertise and estimation of artworks

Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : 'expertise' is a faux ami here, and this word order suggests 'firmm' is an adjective ('ferme') qualifying 'expertise', rather than a business (= 'firme')
