French term

risques bruts et résiduels

French to English Tech/Engineering Engineering: Industrial occupational health and safety
From an occupational health and safety risk evaluation. "Residual risk" is easy enough, but I'm not sure what the correct translation of "brut" is in this context.

Discussion

Fair enough Tree, bark, etc...
Howard Cooper (asker) Feb 22, 2010:
No, I do not think it is a typo for "bruits." The document is not sound specific.
chris collister Feb 22, 2010:
Context.... I'm not necessarily disagreeing with anyone, but with so little context to go on, it's impossible to be more precise (or less imprecise).
Stéphanie Soudais Feb 22, 2010:
No typo for me either
Rebecca Davis Feb 22, 2010:
If you do a spot check, you will find plenty of references to "gross risk", and lots of references to "risque bruit (no s)" too.
chris collister Feb 22, 2010:
noises off... It's true that industrial "noise" is rarely plural in EN, but FR (as in so many other ways) is different. In a former life I studied occupational exposure to noise and vibration on ships, but never came across the term "gross risk", legislators preferring a finer focus for their legal microscopes.
HOWEVER, a lot more context would help.
Rebecca Davis Feb 22, 2010:
I think if it was a typo, "bruit" would be in the singular; but context is everything...
chris collister Feb 22, 2010:
noise Could this be a typo for "bruits"? In which case, "residuels" would be background noise. What is the context?

inherent and residual risk(s)

or 'gross and net risk(s)'
Example sentence:

The formula to calculate residual risk is (inherent risk) x (control risk) where inherent risk is (threats × vulnerability).

The gross and net risk scores can then be used to prioritise all risks across the organisation.

untreated and residual risks

bruts means untreated or unsolved ie, a risk which cannot be overcome.

I have used the word 'untreated' as this refers to health risks as well. it may be in the form of a malady which is incurable and for which no solution has been found.
