Most of the work published on high-shear granulation deals with results obtained in small-scale equipment. Very little research, if any, dealing with scale-up has been published. Recently, different theoretical approaches to scale-up of a high-shear granulation have been reviewed by Horsthuis et al. (5). They compared the following four approaches:
* relative swept volume — work input on the material which is assumed to provide densification

During the wet-granulation process, the impellers impact the powder mixture and keep the mixture moving. During this process, binder solution is distributed and the powder mixture is compacted and densified. Relative swept volume, the volume swept out per second by impellor and chopper divided by the volume of the mixer, is the indicator of the work input on the powder material inside the bowl of the granulator.
