Discussion

Heidi Lind Feb 9, 2008:
Yes but regardless of country/location and branch used, the day is called Palm Sunday in the Catholic church. I was just wondering if the benediction is actually on the same Sunday and if so, using the term 'Palm Sunday' would not encompass it all.
Stephen Gobin Feb 9, 2008:
Good point, Heidi. The type of branch used reflects the part of Europe where the ceremony takes place. Palm trees do not grow naturally in northern Europe so in Britain for instance the "palm willow" is traditionally used.
Heidi Lind Feb 9, 2008:
Regardless of the type of branch being blessed. Is this benediction not performed on Palm Sunday? Perhaps I would include that in the calendar.

Blessing of pussy willows / pussy willow branches

Siehe: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catkin

"palm" bouquet blessing

THE PALMS — In central Europe, large clusters of plants, interwoven with flowers and adorned with ribbons, are fastened to the top of a wooden stick. All sizes of such palm bouquets may be seen, from the small children's bush to rods of ten feet and more. The regular "palm," however, consists in most European countries of pussy willows bearing their catkin blossoms.

The Palmbuschen is made from a wooden pole, which can be up to 2,5 metres tall, to which people attach twigs from willow (before it flowers), and evergreen trees like yew, juniper and boxwood. The Palmbuschen is then decorated with pretzels, apples and coloured ribbons.

After the Palmbuschen has been completed, people take it to a church so that it is blessed. They then take them around the fields, which are thought to bring good luck for harvests.

Note from asker:
Peer comment(s):

neutral Diana Loos : "Pussy willows" are the little silver-grey cushions that look like cats' paws, "catkins" are the golden ones that look like cats' tails.

Blessing of Palm Branches

You could use this phrase. As far as the "Palmkätzchen" I would simply say "Blessing of Pussy Willow Branches".

Lots of Google hits not only relating to Catholic liturgy but also tourist-related articles talking about Palm Sunday in southern Germany and Austria
