Dear Colleagues,
I'd like to meet as many of you as possible at this Powwow in the heart of London, in Crouch End. The exact venue shall be confirmed very soon. Please post your thoughts on the forum regarding the best venue between Monkey Nuts & The Queens. All your suggestions shall be welcome of course...
This powwow will be an excellent opportunity for translators present in London (whether they live there or are just sharing in the fun during the Olympics) to put a face to a name on the computer on Proz.com.
If you would like to come, we would love to see you – just send me an e-mail or post a message in the forum so I know you are coming.
Looking forward to meeting old - and new - Prozian friends...

As the host city of the 2012 Olympics, London will be the temporary home of people from 216 countries.
According to some newspapers, with such diversity, communication between ambassadors, athletes and spectators can be a logistical and linguistic nightmare...
Our Powwow could be a good opportunity to challenge this point of view... Please share your thoughts on this page

In science fiction movies everyone either speaks English or has a universal translator. Now the iPhone has one that works for 23 languages (all of them human, so if an alien shows up you're still out of luck).
The app is called VoiceTra4U-M. It translates voices from 13 languages and text from an additional 10. The application was designed by the Universal Speech Translation Advanced Research Consortium, or U-STAR. It's being rolled out in the App Store in time for the London Oympics,... See more

A few lines on the pub: This lovely ornate Victorian pub was originally built as a hotel, just down the road from the Clock Tower in the middle of Crouch End. It has two lovely rooms, the big bar with its central counter, and the dining room with its wonderfully ornate ceiling and open kitchen. In addition, it has an oasis of a garden at the back (heated in winter) which is probably Crouch End's best- kept secret. The Queens serves fantastically well- kept beers and ales, as well a long list of wines by the bottle and glass. The food is delicious: fresh, seasonal and constantly changing. In keeping with our fervent wish to provide good value as well as exceptional quality, there is a weekday £5 Lunch, with daily-changing dishes but always fish & chips, in addition to the longer daily lunch and dinner menus.

A few lines on the pub: So how do you find this great place to hang out? We are in the heart of Crouch End, North London. Who cares if there’s no tube? There are plenty of MonkeyNuts around! If you are from further afield, or are just one of those people who actually like the tube, you can take the Victoria or Picadilly line to Finsbury Park. From Finsbury Park: Take the W7 bus to Crouch End Broadway. From Highgate or Archway: Take a 41 bus for Tottenham Hale. While you are on our patch, take a chance to visit some of our friends and neighbours. Tell them a monkey sent you...

Queens sounds good to me, I have no experience of Monkey Nuts (first saw it the other week when waiting for a bus "up the hill"- I live in nearby Muswell Hill).

To get from Highgate to Crouch End you would need 2 buses - 134 or 43 to Muswell Hill and then W7 down the hill. My advice, would be to make sure to get off the tube at Archway.
Or better/faster/easier, take the Piccadilly line from central London to Finsbury Park and then the W7 which will get to Crouch End in approx 10 mins.
Any more people interested in choosing a great venue?

We have electronic signs on our main roads telling us to allow an extra 3 hours for our journeys during the Olympics. For someone who lives "out of town", that makes central London a No Go Area for the duration! Crouch End sounds a great idea.
