German term

Verbindlichkeitsrückstellung

German to English Bus/Financial Accounting HGB
Can anyone help me with "Verbindlichkeitsrückstellung" under HGB? The company is a German GmbH that is in the business of leasing.

"Der Verkauf und das anschließende Leasingverhältnis werden als zwei getrennte Vorgänge behandelt. Für die mögliche Verbindlichkeit aus der Mietschlusszahlung wäre eine Verbindlichkeitsrückstellung über die Laufzeit des Leasingvertrags aufzubauen (maximal bis zur Höhe der Mietschlusszahlung), wenn damit zu rechnen ist, dass die Gesellschaft bei Vertragsende in Anspruch genommen wird. "

After finding the term "provisions for liabilities and charges", I chased it up and found RobinB's comment on something relating to Austrian GAAP:
"The term "provisions for liabilities and charges" was eliminated by the EU Modernisation Directive, and was entirely silly in any case because it's doppelt gemoppelt: provisions are themselves just a sub-category of liabilities."

However, I can't find it in the HGB taxonomies in the abra search either before or after the BilMoG, so I'm back to square one.

Grateful for any ideas!

Thanks Great! Thanks a lot, Robin!
RobinB Aug 10, 2010:
Clarification for Michael Not all German GAAP provisions are for (external) obligations, e.g. Aufwandsrückstellungen, which are provisions for internal expenses. That's why, in the academic literature at least, a distinction is sometimes made between the three classes of provisions I mentioned in my initial comment. But that's really just a matter of German BWL theory, and shouldn't affect the translation here, of course!
Michael Kucharski Aug 10, 2010:
Mit Robin: Rückstellungen sind per definitionem für Verbindlichkeiten zu bilden. Daher ist der Terminus Verbindlichkeitsrückstellung doppeltgemoppelt (weiße Schimmel, nasses Wasser ;-)
RobinB Aug 10, 2010:
Just use "provision" Niamh, just use "provision" here, there's nothing else needed in English. German texts sometimes use "Verbindlichkeitsrückstellung" to distinguish these provisions from "Drohverlustrückstellungen" and "Aufwandsrückstellungen", but what we're talking about here are traditional provisions in accordance with section 249(1) sentence 1, first half-sentence: "Rückstellungen sind für ungewisse Verbindlichkeiten ... zu bilden".

liability accrual

If they don't like "provisions", maybe this might appeal!

provision for liabilities

though accrual would also do in this case
