I was sad to read that Professor Peter Newmark, known as a pioneer of the discipline of translation studies and a passionate champion of languages, has died in his home in Guildford, Surrey, at the age of 95.

After some years as the head of languages at the Polytechnic of Central London (now the University of Westminster) he taught and lectured at the Centre for Translation Studies at the University of Surrey in Guildford. He was also a leading light in the CIOL and its Education Trust.

He published many articles and books and perhaps his most well-known is A Textbook of Translation.

Two obituaries are to be found here:

An article also appeared in today's (22/07/2011) print edition of the Surrey Advertiser. Others are accessible on the Web.

Our thoughts are with his family.

Just saw this in The Linguist. Aug 16, 2011

I was saddened to learn of the passing of such a perspicacious linguist but astonished he was still writing with such passion at the age of 95.
