If you live in a university town or have contacts with your old uni, it's worth trying to find out what's happening with the students from Ukraine and Russia. If you live in a university town or have contacts with your old uni, it's worth trying to find out what's happening with the students from Ukraine and Russia. Here in southern Germany, they're gradually returning for the new semester. I'm being told that quite a few of them lack or are unable to access funds and are falling through the cracks in the system. Meal vouchers, rent deferrals and small cash payments are being offered to some of them, but it's all a bit piecemeal. Not sure what the longer-term solution is, but - by way of example - the "Friends of the Uni" here are setting up an account that people can pay donations into to help these students and hoping that former students will pitch in if they can.Collapse

Thanks for the reminder! Apr 8, 2022

I have been meaning to see what my old uni has in place for these students. It has lots of international students and has been very supportive throughout the pandemic, providing assistance and funding for students who were unable to return home or ran into other problems. They held two fundraisers among alumni then, so perhaps they don't want to keep asking us for more now, but I will have a look if anything is happening.
