hi,
I am trying to find the best and quickest way of extracting the text from Macromedia Flash files. I would not have to compile them back or anything. Just get the text strings to be translated. What is the best software out there for that?
I really appreciate your help.

Hola Miguel,
Flash has always posed a challenge to me, when in fact, the client should have sent me the pieces of text, but I am somewhat stubborn, and I couldn't accept that there was no other way than resorting to the customer.
It is not the best, never the quickest, but I finally reached my goal: ABBYY FineReader or any software that may allow you to convert objects (scanned ones) into text.
The process was not at all quick, but as said, I succeeded: Press printscreen as many times as needed to get all your Flash presentation. You will have xx number of "images", then open each at a time and "read" them with ABBYY or the software you can get. Your images will no longer be "objects" but "text". Then process them as usual to translate them.
This is not a state-of-the-art solution, but nobody ever told me how to deal with Flash and I invented my own way.

Using ABBYY FineReader is a nice idea. Also Avral Tramigo (seems to be a good solution for translators).
There are SWF decompiler programs, e.g. Sothink SWD Decompiler:

Thank you for considering ABBYYFinder a good idea. Anyway, it takes time (the whole process). But your suggestion, Sabine, seems quite focused. I will see yours afterwards and let Miguel know about it, too. Übrigens, do you have any pricing information about that software? Thank you in advance.

Tramigo is a good solution and it's free. It works on SWF files (with no more than 10 translation 'segments' for the free version).
But the swf files need to be prepared for translation. For example the fonts have to be determined and it will only work on dynamic text.

Tramigo also only works on Flash files that have been created with MX. I tried to translate a Flash file created with OpenOffice, but it wouldn't budge. On a game that I downloaded for testing purposes, it extracted only a portion of the text, and only some of the translated text was re-inserted into the Flash file. Needs experimenting, methinks.
