我这人实事求是,好就说好,不好就说不好,不会无原则地吹捧别人。当然,翻译文章不同于在网上聊天,标准要高得多。不过,一个人的中文水平如何,在论坛上也可以大致看出来。别提我所看到的某些翻译稿,连不少专家和律师写的中文专利,也很不通顺而且逻辑混乱。可见,我们每个人都应该不断提高自己的语言水平,精益求精。这是一辈子的事情。

海峡两岸中文之间的差异,是由于两岸之间几十年的相互隔绝而造成的。但与中国几千年的文明史相比,这几十年时间只不过是短暂的一瞬间。所以说,我们要承认差异,但也不要刻意夸大。当然,在译入繁体中文时,我也反对用电脑把简体转换成繁体后稍加编辑后就交差。得下功夫修改才行。我常做用于台湾的医药、化工专利和 MSDS (物质安全资料表)等英翻中项目。因此,我常在网上查阅台湾的 MSDS 和医药、化工方面的专利、论文等资料以作为参考,还经常使用台湾的网上词典。好在我们在这里浏览台湾的网站很方便,不必“翻墙”。台湾的某些机构在科技名词的审定方面做了很多很好的工作。有些客户要求,用于台湾的繁体中译文必须由繁体中文的 native speaker 翻译,这是一个有利于你的条件。

说起马铃薯,从中国北方到台湾的所谓外省人,应该也会知道土豆就是指马铃薯。来自上海的,还会把它叫做洋山芋。一土一洋,炒出来味道是一样的,除非调料不同。

我欣赏港式点心,但对港式中文不了解。对于港式中文, Rita 应该更有发言权吧!

我们内蒙古某些地方的方言中一直把"土豆"称之为"山药"。直到上了社会我才知道"山药"另有其物,形状是细长形的。我曾在武汉呆过几年,苕这个词在武汉可是用来表示傻瓜的。

河南那邊品種不同嗎?紅薯聽起來更像美國這邊的yam,比較不甜,水分比較多,跟sweet potato不大一樣。
台灣叫sweet potato也叫地瓜的,說番薯的時候常用台語說:)

河南人所谓的红薯,应该就是 sweet potato,而不是 yam。Sweet potato 与 yam 貌似相同,但还真不是同一种植物。我估计,一般美国人恐怕也搞不清 sweet potato 和 yam 之间到底有多大区别。

山东人也把 sweet potato 叫做地瓜。但四川人所谓的地瓜,却与他们所谓的红苕有很大区别,外观与味道都相差很大,吃起来有点像萝卜。

我想,翻译 sweet potato 和 potato 时也得根据上下文来选择适当的中文名称。如果翻译科技文章,恐怕还是使用学名为佳。

同意 Yueyin 说的。 我那时上山下乡在陕北,记得老乡们 称 sweet potatoes 为 “红薯”,称 potatoes 为 “洋芋” 或 “洋山芋”。 中国古时不少朝代都建都于西安,所以我一直认为陕西一带的用语习惯挺有历史参考价值的。 (While living in Shensi, we as Beijing transplants used to comment on many local usages that struck us as passed down from ancient times. But of course without formal research, we could easily have been mistaken on a lot of our observations in this regard)

What is the difference between sweet potatoes and yams?


Although yams and sweet potatoes are both angiosperms (flowering plants), they are not related botanically. Yams are a monocot (a plant having one embryonic seed leaf) and from the Dioscoreaceae or Yam family. Sweet Potatoes, often called ‘yams’, are a dicot (a plant having two embryonic seed leaves) and are from the Convolvulacea or morning glory family.

Yams

Yams are closely related to lilies and grasses. Native to Africa and Asia, yams vary in size from that of a small potato to a record 130 pounds (as of 1999). There are over 600 varieties of yams and 95% of these crops are grown in Africa. Compared to sweet potatoes, yams are starchier and drier.

Sweet Potatoes

The many varieties of sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) are members of the morning glory family, Convolvulacea. The skin color can range from white to yellow, red, purple or brown. The flesh also ranges in color from white to yellow, orange, or orange-red. Sweet potato varieties are classified as either ‘firm’ or ‘soft’. When cooked, those in the ‘firm’ category remain firm, while ‘soft’ varieties become soft and moist. It is the ‘soft’ varieties that are often labeled as yams in the United States.

Why the confusion?

In the United States, firm varieties of sweet potatoes were produced before soft varieties. When soft varieties were first grown commercially, there was a need to differentiate between the two. African slaves had already been calling the ‘soft’ sweet potatoes ‘yams’ because they resembled the yams in Africa. Thus, ‘soft’ sweet potatoes were referred to as ‘yams’ to distinguish them from the ‘firm’ varieties.

Today the U.S. Department of Agriculture requires labels with the term ‘yam’ to be accompanied by the term ‘sweet potato.’ Unless you specifically search for yams, which are usually found in an international market, you are probably eating sweet potatoes!

关于河南的红薯,可能我还是比较有发言权的,我小时候家里种过,自己也亲自下地刨过红薯。红薯应该是统称吧,据我亲眼目睹,红薯应该有三种:一种就是红薯,皮或红或白,里面稍黄,烤熟或煮汤吃起来比较甜。一种皮是紫色的,但不同于紫薯,里面是白色的,烤熟或煮汤吃起来比较面。第三种皮是白的,里面也是白的,吃起来口感介于第一种和第二种之间。这三种的地上叶子形状基本上一样,颜色有一些细微的差异,不仔细看也看不出来。

刚才仔细想了一下,把第二种和第三种的特点调整了一下。

你好!确实很久没见你露面。你学习一定很忙吧?谢谢你的意见。

我想人们最初命名红薯、白薯时,大概就是根据它里面的颜色。到了后来就成了习惯,那里面的颜色就不重要了。例如,北京人往往会说,我爱吃红瓤的白薯,他爱吃黄瓤的白薯。

我想,以上关于马铃薯和红薯的讨论对于翻译的启示就是要入乡随俗。在翻译时,要根据译文受众的不同而注意语言的差异。

谢谢!学习还算顺利,已经拿到博士毕业证了,最近刚到一所学校上班。

根据Mr. Chan提供的图片,如果第一个算一种,第二个另外算一种的话(没有皮的图片),应该就是河南这边统称的红薯了。
昨天这里下暴雨,今天听了一天电,下午五六点来的电,没有电的夏天真的好热啊。

加州的大華超市稱這種purple yam為紫薯,顏色讓我想起以前在台灣吃的"芋頭番薯"(芋頭加番薯的混合品種,超好吃),不過我到今天仍然不確定紫薯是否就是芋頭番薯。
