English to Japanese: The Suwa Noh Stage of Sado Island General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: History
Translation - Japanese Constructed in 1924, this is one of the comparatively newer noh stages on Sado island. The theatre features a hipped tile roof, both a main and a rear stage, a painted scene panel of a pine tree in the traditional style, and a bell used in the production "Dōjōji" hanging from the ceiling. In addition to a seating area for the chorus, there is a kagaminoma (the "hall of mirrors," a room where the actors prepare) connected to the main stage by a covered bridge passageway with both exposed and hidden corridors. Records of past performances are scant, however recently college students have been training here as part of their school's Noh club and occasionally performing for the local community.
