Per viverla appieno si deve scendere in strada, mischiarsi con la gente, occupare uno spicchio di Sanpietrini nei vicoli e nelle piazze del Centro Storico, possibilmente seduti su un muretto o una scalinata con un gin tonic in mano. Di questo vive Roma: di magnifici palcoscenici e terrazze all’aperto di cui godere – grazie alla clemenza del clima – praticamente tutto l’anno.
Ma è ovvio che la Capitale offre anche rifugi sicuri dove nascondersi fino a notte fonda: cocktail bar d’albergo, discoteche e club (troppo pochi, per la verità) per ascoltare musica dal vivo. Ben più numerosi sono i centri sociali: alcuni, in oltre vent’anni, hanno avuto un ruolo importante nel promuovere la scena elettronica, la musica rock e le sonorità reggae. Può essere divertente – a patto di levarsi la puzza sotto il naso - provare a tirare fino all’alba in uno di questi spazi alternativi e anticonvenzionali dove però non è la qualità del bere il punto di forza. Per fortuna Roma, da qualche stagione, ha inaugurato templi del bere miscelato all’altezza di altre capitali europee: se conoscete la parola d’ordine potete bussare alla porta giusta e accedere così ai nuovi speakeasy e al loro repertorio di cocktail vintage e iconografia d’antan.
La bevanda che però più di ogni altra sta dissetando le giovani e meno giovani generazioni è la birra artigianale: in ogni quartiere sono spuntate come funghi insegne dedicate al culto trasversale di malti e luppoli, che ha unito le diverse comunità locali, dai pariolini ai radical chic di Monti agli hipster del Pigneto. Ogni quartiere ha la sua tribù della notte: voi a quale volete appartenere?
Translation - English Rome's nightlife is noisy, over-the-top, eternal. To get the full experience, you should hit the streets, mingle with the people, take over your slice of its cobblestone streets and squares in the historic center, perhaps perched on the edge of a wall or sitting on stairs with a gin and tonic in hand. This is true Roman life: magnificent outdoor venues and terraces which the kindness of Rome's climate lets you enjoy almost year round.
And, of course, Rome also offers sanctuaries where you can hide away late into the night, such as hotel cocktail bars, discos and clubs (though admittedly too few) to listen to live music. Far more numerous are its social centres — community spaces that have played a leading role for more than twenty years in promoting the electronica, rock and reggae scenes. As long as you can keep your nose from turning up at them, it can be fun hanging out until dawn at one of these alternative, anti-conventional spots (though the quality of the drinks isn't their strong point). Happily, for a few years now, Rome has been opening mixed drink establishments on par with other European capitals. If you have the password, just knock on the right door and get into the new "speakeasies" and their repertoire of vintage cocktails and decor from yesteryear.
But it's craft beer that is busiest quenching the thirst of young and old alike these days. In every neighbourhood signs are popping up like mushrooms, all devoted to the cult of malts and hops, a trend shared by the most disparate communities; the locals of Parioli, the radical chic crowd of Monti, or the hipsters of Pigneto— every neighbourhood has its night-time tribe. Which one is yours?

Source text - Italian Tra il 1990 e il 2010 sono stati ottenuti importanti risultati per quanto riguarda la riduzione della mortalità infantile e materna, come auspicato anche da quarto e quinto Millennium Development Goals. Tuttavia, i dati variano in maniera allarmante da paese a paese, e ancora tra regioni rurali e urbane, con picchi di mortalità nelle aree rurali più povere dell’Africa Sub-Sahariana e l’Asia meridionale. Per far fronte a questi problemi, massima priorità deve essere data a interventi finalizzati a rendere disponibili e accessibili a tutti i servizi ostetrici di emergenza (EmOC).
Lo studio, pubblicato dall’International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics, presenta i dati raccolti nell’ospedale di Yrol in Sud Sudan, gestito dall’ONG Medici con l’Africa Cuamm, riguardanti il numero di donne ricoverate per parto nel 2012 e mette in evidenza i miglioramenti ottenuti rispetto agli anni precedenti. Viene infatti rilevato un aumento nel numero totale di parti in ospedale, aumentati di oltre il doppio rispetto al 2009, arrivando a circa il 13% degli 8213 parti previsti nell’area (contro il 5,9% del 2009).

Translation - English Between 1990 and 2010, significant results were obtained for reducing child and maternal mortality, as set by the fourth and fifth Millennium Development Goals. However, there are alarming disparities from country to country and between rural and urban regions with concentrations of mortality in the poorest rural areas of Sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia. To address these problems, top priority should be given to interventions designed to make emergency obstetric services (EmOC) available and accessible to everyone.
The study, published in the International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics, presents data collected in the Yirol hospital of South Sudan, managed by the NGO Doctors with Africa–CUAMM. It considered the number of women admitted to the hospital for delivery in 2012 and highlights improvements over previous years. An increase was seen in the total number of hospital births, which more than doubled over 2009, reaching about 13% of the 8,213 births in the area (compared to 5.9% in 2009).
The causes of this improvement can be found in an approach centered on the hospital's operation. One of its strengths was the introduction of an ambulance in 2011. Though it is also used for other emergencies, the ambulance is managed by the maternity department, providing a free service 24 hours a day, which helps women be quickly admitted to the hospital.

Source text - Italian Oggetto dell’indagine è indagare i processi di costruzione identitaria di giovani musulmane di “seconda” generazione nello spazio privato e nella sfera pubblica italiana. Queste giovani – che in assenza di denominazioni più convincenti preferiamo chiamare “figlie delle migrazioni” (Granata, 2011: 35) – rappresentano sicuramente un osservatorio di studio privilegiato. Si tratta infatti di adolescenti e ragazze sempre esposte a sentirsi un po’ “fuori luogo”: tra gli adulti delle proprie collettività musulmane di riferimento che diffidano della “contaminazione” dei loro stili di vita, così come tra i coetanei italiani che ne percepiscono comunque la “differenza” (Portes e Rumbaut, 2001). Sullo sfondo i richiami e gli echi da luoghi lontani ma a volte percepiti vicini soprattutto per gli avvenimenti degli ultimi anni, come le “primavere” arabe o l’affermazione di una nuova minaccia fondamentalista raffigurata dall’Isis.
Il lavoro teorico e di ricerca si è sviluppato in particolare intorno a due categorie sociali di identificazione – il genere e l’orientamento religioso – raccogliendo narrazioni biografiche di adolescenti e ragazze cresciute in Italia.
Translation - English The study investigates the processes of identity construction among “second-generation” young Muslim women in private spaces and in the Italian public sphere. These young women—whom, for the lack of a more precise term, we will call “daughters of migration” (Granata, 2011:35)—unquestionably offer an exceptional vantage point. These young women and adolescents are easily subject to feeling “out of place,” caught between the adults of their Muslim communities, who are distrustful of the “contamination” of their lifestyles, and their Italian peers who perceive their “difference” (Portes and Rumbaut, 2001). In the background are echoes of and ties to distant places, often perceived as close, especially given recent events, such as the Arab Springs and the rise of the new fundamentalist threat of ISIS.
This theoretical and research project developed primarily around two social categories of identification—gender and religious orientation—collecting biographical narratives of adolescents and young women who have grown up in Italy.

E questo non solo in termini di vendite e di popolarità dell’autrice, divenuta una presenza nei media ed una delle speakers più richieste a livello mondiale (si veda, su tutti, il suo intervento al TED su http://goo.gl/EYqDtZ). Il libro, e non è sempre così, ha avuto anche un notevole successo di critica, e il fatto che testate come il Financial Times e l’Huffington Post lo abbiano collocato tra i migliori volumi del 2013 è lì a testimoniarlo.
Gli endorsements che ha avuto, anche solo quelli citati nel risvolto di copertina, chiariscono le ragioni di questa valutazione positiva. Autorevoli osservatori hanno parlato di un volume “incisivo”, c’è chi ha scritto che era “arrivato il tempo di questo libro”, chi ha messo in rilievo come esso fornisca “linee guida per individuare le politiche industriali più efficaci”. E’, quindi, un lavoro che piace per la persuasività delle argomentazioni, per il suo ‘dar voce’ ad una presa di posizione che si attendeva, per il suo costituire una guida concreta a chi è impegnato nel policy-making. Tutto giusto.
Forse, però, i giudizi più interessanti sono stati quelli di chi ha ritenuto il volume uno strumento utile per superare le convenzioni che circondano l’intervento pubblico. E’ qui il vero punto di questo studio, quello che spiega perché abbia avuto questa capacità di influenza. Quello della Mazzucato è, infatti, un lavoro che si incarica di sfatare alcuni miti, spesso molto resistenti, e che porta a cambiare, e di parecchie gradazioni, le lenti con cui siamo abituati a guardare al rapporto tra pubblico e privato nell’economia.
Translation - English The Entrepreneurial State, written by Mariana Mazzucato, an economics professor at the University of Sussex, joins Thomas Piketty's Capital in the Twenty-First Century as one of the "sensations" of last year's economic journalism. Its great success was not only in terms of sales and the writer's popularity, as she became a major media presence and one of the most in-demand speakers worldwide (as just one example, listen to her TED talk here http://goo.gl/EYqDtZ). The book also met with considerable critical success — which is far from a given — as seen in publications like the Financial Times and the Huffington Post ranking it among the best books of 2013.
The endorsements it earned, such as the ones quoted on the book jacket, make it clear why it earned such praise. Expert observers called it "incisive," said that it was a book whose "time has come," and noted that it provides a blueprint for choosing the most effective industrial policies. The book has been admired for the persuasiveness of its reasoning, for how it voices a much-needed stance and for constituting a practical guide for those working in policy making. All these things are true.
Yet, the most interesting opinions may have been those that saw the book as a useful tool for moving past conventional wisdom around public intervention. This is the research's true point and indeed why it has been so influential. Mazzucato's book sets itself the task of debunking myths — often very deeply rooted — and invites us to change the lenses (and by no small degree) through which we are accustomed to looking at the relationship between the public and private sectors in the economy.
