If there is a theoretical element of death that both the humanistic classical conception and its more popular version – exemplified by Marvel’s comics and movies – share is the tempting (and foolish) idea that it is the great equalizer. Let’s brush aside the classical idea that death comes to us all, as if the difference between living and surviving was not relevant. And turn our focus to the other perspective, defended by the followers of the Gaia’s avenging theory peppered with Malthusian ideals, that seems to regard pandemics and catastrophes as Earth’s defense mechanisms against those who harms it and be founded by the objective overpopulation issue. We are referencing the theory divulged in the Avengers movies by Thanos, a character inspired by the Infinity gauntlet saga in the Marvel comics, a villain and fervent servant of Death itself. To him, the imminent arrival of pandemics, wars, famish and climatic catastrophes brought by the increase of the universe’s population and the unwavering consumption of natural resources of each and every planet demands the execution of a plan in which he mistakes randomness with a supposed democratic nature. To Thanos – the ethimological coincidence of his name with the Greek deity of death (Thánatos) cannot be unnoticed –, this apparently just and fair characteristic, that would allow the salvation of the universe from its doom, would be brought by a literal finger snap that would eliminate half of the cosmos population without any discernable distinction. The population – powerful, rich, poor and sick alike – would be cut by half
