Source text - English Natural products and functional/medical foods are now widely acknowledged as having an effect on the microbiome of the intestine, which in turn influences the outcome of certain disease. This book reviews the impact and effects of natural products and functional/medical foods (nutritional programming) on disease management, specifically focusing on diseases related to 1) Inflammation and Immunity, 2) Cancer, COPD and Cachexia, 3) Allergy and 4) Brain Neuro/Immune. Hippocrates said "let medicine be thy food and food be thy medicine". While most of us are familiar with Hippocrates famous words, we admit that in recent times, the disciplines of pharma and nutrition have evolved separately. Today, with the ever growing burden of diseases in modern society, we see a convergence of the two in relation to specific disease prevention and treatment. This re-discovered common ground between the complementary values of pharma and nutrition can be conceptualized in the term pharma-nutrition. Various chapters in the book review the aspects of molecular characteristics of food ingredients towards clinical effectiveness and relevance.

Hipócrates disse: "Deixa o remédio ser a tua comida e a comida o teu remédio". Embora a maioria de nós esteja familiarizado com as famosas palavras de Hipócrates, admitimos que, nos últimos tempos, as disciplinas da farmacêutica e da nutrição evoluíram separadamente. Hoje, com o crescente fardo das doenças na sociedade moderna, vemos uma convergência das duas em relação à prevenção e tratamento específico de doenças. Este redescoberto campo comum entre os valores complementares da farmacêutica e da nutrição pode ser conceptualizado no termo nutrição farmacológica. Vários capítulos no livro reveem os aspetos das características moleculares dos ingredientes alimentares relativamente à eficácia e relevância clínica.

Source text - English The outer appearance of the skin is a reflection of a person’s
inner health and vitality
Skin is the largest organ of the body and its health is crucial for our survival. It is the first line of defence and plays an important role in helping the body carry out vital processes. The skin has a complex structure consisting of different layers with each having unique and important functions.
Our skin is constantly exposed to oxidative stress from internal and external stressors such as bad diet, metabolic byproducts and various environmental factors like pollution and UV rays. Oxidative stress stimulates the production of highly reactive molecules called ’free radicals’ which initiate a chain reaction, attacking other cells and causing damage to the skin, such as fine lines, wrinkles, roughness and loss of elasticity.
In order to slow down the aging process and reduce the visible signs of aging, protection must be provided to all layers to the skin, from the inside out.

A pele é o maior órgão do corpo e a sua saúde é crucial para a
nossa sobrevivência. É a primeira linha de defesa e desempenha
um papel importante em ajudar o corpo a realizar processos vitais.
A pele tem uma estrutura complexa que consiste em diferentes
camadas, cada uma com funções únicas e importantes.
A nossa pele está constantemente exposta ao stress oxidativo de
fatores de pressão internos e externos, como má alimentação,
derivados metabólicos e vários fatores ambientais, como poluição
e raios UV. O stress oxidativo estimula a produção de moléculas
altamente reativas chamadas "radicais livres" que iniciam uma
reação em cadeia, atacando outras células e causando danos à
pele, como linhas finas, rugas, aspereza e perda de elasticidade.
Para retardar o processo de envelhecimento e reduzir os sinais
visíveis de envelhecimento, é necessário proteger todas as
camadas da pele, de dentro para fora.
