Nye bekæmpelsesmoduler til radrensere skal styrke virkningen af mekanisk ukrudtsbekæmpelse
Forbedrede resultater med bekæmpelse af ukrudt på landbrugsmarkerne er målsætningen for et nyt forskningsprojekt med deltagelse af Aarhus Universitet og Kongskilde Industries. Projektet satser på nyudvikling af skærløsninger til forbedring af ukrudtseffekten ved radrensning på små rækkeafstande. Desuden skal projektet udvikle et nyt redskabsprincip til en effektiv bekæmpelse af alm. kvik og andre rodukrudtsarter med øverligt placerede rødder og udløbere..
Stigende resistens over for herbicidmidler og økologernes nødvendige behov for at foretage mekanisk ukrudtsbekæmpelse er noget af baggrunden for et nyt forskningsprojekt, der er under ledelse af forskere fra Aarhus Universitet.
Projektet, der går under betegnelsen ”NEWCUT – Nye værktøjer til mekanisk ukrudtsbekæmpelse”, har netop modtaget 3,5 mio. kr. fra Fødevareministeriets Grønt Udviklings- og DemonstrationsProgram til blandt andet at udvikle nye bekæmpelsesmoduler til radrensere. De skal sikre højere og mere sikre effekter mod ukrudt. Desuden vil projektets partnere, Aarhus Universitet, Kongskilde Industries og Videncentret for Landbrug, udvikle en ny konceptmaskine til bekæmpelse af rodukrudt med øverligt placerede rødder og udløbere.
Vi vil udvikle skærløsninger til rækkeafstande mindre end 20 cm. Moderne styringsteknologi vil kunne håndtere styring af skær på små rækkeafstande. Projektet vil udvikle skærudformninger, som giver optimal ukrudtseffekt på små rækkestande, og som giver brugeren mulighed for fleksible skærtyper, hvis der eksempelvis er behov for hyppeeffekter mod småt ukrudt i rækken, forklarer projektleder Bo Melander, lektor på Institut for Agroøkologi på Aarhus Universitet.
Store rækkeafstand giver risiko for udbyttetab
Han peger på, at muligheden for effektiv radrensning på små rækkeafstande er vigtig, fordi forskning udført på blandt andet AU Flakkebjerg har vist, at rækkeafstande over 20 cm til korn kan give udbyttetab på 10-15 procent.
Mens nye styringsteknologier har gjort radrensning mere rationel og omkostningseffektiv, så har udviklingen af de ukrudtbekæmpende dele i form af skær og tænder ikke fulgt med. Udfordringerne er blandt andet gengroning efter bekæmpelse, for svage effekter mod lidt større ukrudt og manglede beskyttelse af afgrøden ved radrensning på bestemte tidspunkter.
I projektet skal parterne således udvikle roterende aggregater til montering efter selve skærdelen til forbedring af ukrudtseffekten under mere ugunstige forhold som stort ukrudt og fugtige vejrperioder.
Vores udvikling af de roterende aggregater vil tage udgangspunkt i split-hoeing- og basket weeding—principperne. Split-hoeing bygger på stive stålbørster, som drives af oliemotorer. Princippet har vist meget gode effekter mod selv større ukrudt. Basket weeding består af netruller, som primært virker mod ukrudt i jordoverfladen. Princippet kan være mere enkelt end split-hoeing, men kan med kraftudvikling gøres mere aggressivt, siger Bo Melander.
Hos projektpartneren Kongskilde Industries ser chefen for den strategiske udvikling, Ole Green, frem til at realisere projektets potentiale.
Radrensningsløsninger med nye skær- og kombinationsløsninger specielt designede til små rækkeafstande vil være en nyhed på markedet og stille Kongskilde stærkere i konkurrencen. Det forventes helt klart, at projektets lovende løsninger også vil kunne finde anvendelse til radrensning på de mere almindelige rækkeafstande på 50-70 cm, og således også være med til at forbedre Kongskildes nuværende produktprogram, siger Ole Green.

New weeding modules for cultivators to strengthen the effect of mechanical weed removal.
A new research project with joint participation from Aarhus University and Kongskilde Industries aims to improve the effectiveness of crop field weeding. The project hinges on the development of new cutting solutions to improve the effectiveness against weeds when cultivating narrowly separated rows. The project is furthermore to develop a new treatment method to effectively combat couch grass and other root-weeds with shallow-lying roots and runners.
An increased resistance to herbicides, and the requirement for organic farmers to carry out mechanical weeding creates the backdrop for a new research project led by researchers from Aarhus University.
The project, which is titled “NEWCUT – New tools for mechanical weeding”, has just been granted 3.5 million kroner (£380,000 or $630,000) from the Green Development and Demonstration Programme of the Danish Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. This money is, among other things, for the development of new weeding modules for cultivators. These are to ensure a greater and more reliable effectiveness against weeds. In addition to this, the project partners, Aarhus University, Kongskilde Industries and the Knowledge Centre for Agriculture, intend to develop a new machine prototype for combating root-weeds with shallow roots and runners.
We intend to develop cutting solutions for row distances of less than 20 cm. Modern control technology is capable of handling the control of blades at small row distances. The project will develop blade shapes that provide optimal weeding effects at small row distances, while providing the user with the choice of flexible blade types in the event that hoeing effects are required for small weeds within the row, explains project leader Bo Melander, lecturer at the Department of Agroecology at Aarhus University.
Large row distances risks yield loss
He points out that the ability for effective cultivation at small row distances is important, because research carried out at, among other places, AU Flakkebjerg has shown that row distances over 20 cm for corn can result in yield losses of up to 10-15 percent.
While new control technology has made cultivation more rational and cost-effective, the development of weeding equipment by way of blades and teeth has not followed suit. One of the challenges faced is subsequent weed regrowth, weak effect on larger weeds and lack of crop protection during cultivation at specific times.
The project parties are thus to develop rotating aggregators to be mounted behind the blades, in order to improve the weeding effect during particularly unfavourable conditions, such as the presence of large weeds or periods of damp weather.
Our development of the rotating aggregators will be based upon the split-hoeing and basket weeding methods. Split-hoeing is based upon rigid steel brushes driven by oil engines. The method has proven effective against even larger weeds. Basket weeding is based upon net rollers, which are primarily effective against weeds in the surface layers. The method may be simpler than split-hoeing, but it can be made more aggressive by increasing the force used, says Bo Melander.
From the project partner, Kongskilde Industries' side of things, the chief of strategic development, Ole Green, looks forward to realising the projects potential.
Cultivator solutions with new blade and combination configurations specially designed for small row distances would be a new element on the market, and would strengthen Kongskilde's competitiveness. It is of course expected that the project's promising solutions would also be useful for cultivation of the more typical row distances of 50-70 cm, and would thus help improve Kongskilde's current product range, says Ole Green.
