Source text - English Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a specific and the most common form within a heterogeneous group of idiopathic interstitial pneumonias of unknown aetiology, affecting the lung parenchyma. IPF is a chronic, progressive and debilitating disease, characterised by inflammation and scarring of lung tissue resulting in loss of lung function and impaired gas exchange over time.
Symptoms of IPF are gradual in onset, initially presenting as dyspnoea (shortness of breath) upon exertion and a dry cough. These early, non-specific symptoms are commonly mistaken for ageing, cardiac disease, emphysema, bronchitis, asthma or COPD. Such misdiagnosis, or ignoring the early symptoms entirely, may explain why IPF is rarely diagnosed immediately. Often a correct diagnosis may take several months or even years.
Translation - Portuguese A fibrose pulmonar idiopática (FPI) é a forma específica mais comum de um grupo heterogéneo de pneumonias intersticiais idiopáticas de etiologia desconhecida que afetam o parênquima pulmonar. A FPI é uma doença crónica, progressiva e debilitante que se caracteriza pela inflamação e a cicatrização do tecido pulmonar e que resulta na perda da função pulmonar e no comprometimento das trocas gasosas ao longo do tempo.
Os sintomas da FPI surgem gradualmente, começando por se apresentar como dispneia (falta de ar) desencadeada pelo esforço físico e uma tosse seca. Esses primeiros sintomas pouco específicos são geralmente confundidos com sintomas de envelhecimento, doença cardíaca, enfisema, bronquite, asma ou DPOC. Os diagnósticos errados ou a desatenção total aos primeiros sintomas poderão explicar a razão pela qual é raro fazer o diagnóstico imediato da FPI. Normalmente, pode-se demorar vários meses ou, até anos, a chegar ao diagnóstico correto.
